Im thinking of getting a bigger pot for my HLT. A guy at work has a 50 litre stainless stock pot in good nick but without the lid (not too fussed about that). Im having a look at it later today. He wants $80 for it. Is $80 a fair price? They are $180.00 new from allquip. Thoughts?

Buy Buy Buy!

very good price i would say

cheers

Steve - Put your $80 towards an Urn, that way you can have it on a timer & your HLT will be at temp & give you a nice hour or so up your sleeve!

If its got a thick base (copper or aluminium sandwich type) then its a bargain. otherwise its so-so.

It never occurred to me that the temp and timer capabilties of an urn is why an urn would be a good buy. i just figured it was because it was a large metal vessel. Now I know and will keep my eye out for one.

cheers

tell us how you go with the double batch, i'v been a big girls blouse and been to scared to try a double batch in my 50L pot, worried about boil overs

I've been starting with 45L in my 50L kettle. It makes brewday more exciting :)

I've gone up to 48L in my 50L kettle. As Tangent says, keeps you on your toes. ;)

I had considered an urn but could only find 40 litres ones and I dont have $300+ at the moment.

I do doubles in a 50 lt keg Phill, you do have to think about boil overs but don't worry ! I give the top of the boiler a quick shot of compressed air and the foam quickly dies back. Sounds dangerous I know but I do it from about three feet away. :D

You cant seem to get new urns over 30lt that run off 10amp plugs anymore, but you can pick up old ones at auction rooms etc. I scored a 55lt electric urn at the mitchell road auction rooms in Alexandria for $65 a couple of years back, hasn't missed a beat :) . I pop in there occasionally and see them, so there are still a few of them about

I guess that is why I considered the upfront cost of an Urn as very reasonable when you take into account the amount of time that is saved. I guess it all depends on what price you put on your spare time.
