I got a recipe that needs some crystal 20 and some carravienne. Would it be ridiculously stupid if i add the weight of those 2 together and substitute it for caraRed?
Cheers,
losp

Not stupid at all, but it'll change the recipe slightly. They're all crystal malts just made from different bases and kilned to slightly different levels. You'll probably end up in about the same colour range but the character may be a bit different. It's worth a try - I'm pretty sure it won't ruin your beer.

cheers, its for a belg trippel type beer.

for a big Belg trippel I don't think you'll notice. a fair whack of the flavour for those comes from the yeast. I have done many a sub with Belgians before we could get Special B and Aromatic malts here and they all worked out well, including a Rochforte clone that worked brilliantly

Without seeing the actual weights it is possible that x amount of carared will bring a flavour and colour that isn't appropriate for a tripel.
I'd suggest sticking with lighter crystals.
Not saying it won't work but it wouldnt' be the first malt I'd head for making a tripel.
It's a nice crystal malt though...

thanks for the responses. i was just going to use what i have. but i guess I may as well purchase the crystal and caravienne as it cant hurt to have them in inventory.

what does the 20 refer to?
I just picked up some crystal malt (114-145EBC) but dot sure what the 20 refers to?
