How is your ball valve connected to the boiler ? Is it a weldless fitting ? I found a huge receptacle of gunk between the compression washers and the wall of the boiler when I dismantled it one day.
I always assumed that the heat from the boil would have conducted through the ball valve construct to destroy any nasties residing in there but apparently not.
Investing in one of these makes disconnection and cleaning easier.
