pink poodle does have a great variety of import brews, however it is a bit pricey and the staff are usually wankers with fake accents
I've been there quite a few times (even stayed at the hotel above), and found the staff to be excellent. They've always been friendly and seemed to genuinely enjoy their jobs.

Things to do at the Gold Coast

I know it will be winter but there some great beaches, Burleigh and Currumbin are great.

If it's your anniversary, Oscars restaurant at Burleigh has the best view on the coast north towards surfers right ON the water. You'll score plenty of points if you head there. Mermaids downstairs is a great cafe during the day too. Has jazz through the week sometimes. Both pricey, but a great view is worth every cent.

Hire a car - it'll make life easier - I've lived here for years and still can't work out the public transport here. Nothing more romantic than waiting for a bus.

There's a -5 vodka bar in Surfers now too. Again pricey. You get kitted up and have a few drinks in a massive freezer at about -11C.

Hope that helps.

I'm staying "somewhere on the Gold Coast". My other half is taking care of the hotel arrangements. How far is Surfer's Paradise from the GC?

I've heard about the -5C bar, I might go, but I'm going there for the warm weather...

Sounds like you're flying in, you'll arrive in Coolangatta. Surfers is towards the north end of the Gold Coast. It would be a 20 - 30 min drive from the airport to Surfer's.

Have a look at multimap.com or something like that, you can enter the addresses of Burleigh Brewing, Pink Poodle etc and get your bearings.

The Gold Coast is a local council area bounded by NSW to the South, the Logan River to the North (more than 50 km of coastline) and some 30-40km in from the coast (depending on where you start from). Surfers Paradise is a suburb of this area and is about halfway along that stretch of coastline. Tourist central, it's likely you'll be staying handy to there.

Check here for the council website or here for the GC tourism site - might give you some ideas.

microbe have you been into surfers latley? theirs a hole the size of a crater were ripleys was, make way for the new hilton hotel. teh whole raptus plaza and dolphin arcade were leveled for redevelopment.
I try to avoid Surfer's itself. I did go to the website but missed the great big banner across the middle of it saying that it was closed for redevelopment and wouldn't be open till late 2009.

Cheers,

microbe
