I've decided to make half batches of beer so i can brew more often and hopefully get better ay brewing. I'm going to make my first batch tomorrow, however I'm not sure how much yeast in necessary for a 12L batch? I'm using US-05, I have an 11.5gm packet, should I just use half?

I think it says on the packet,"Suitable for up to 30 litres so half the pack should do."
Seal the rest up and keep in the frige.
US-05 is cheap, use the flot if doubtful.

1 gram per litre is a pretty standard pitching rate. Throw the lot in. You'll get a faster, cleaner ferment.

I do small brews so usually I just split the packet up according to similar rules - if half normal size brew, half the packet. If a fifth normal size brew, a fifth of the packet. Etc. A packet works out to about 4-5 teaspoons so it's pretty easy to estimate. I've had no huge problems with this system, so I say, go go go!

I've had good results with half a pack of US-05 into 10 litres.

I'd go with this over splitting a pack and trying to store the remainder. A pack will last a long time in the fridge when un-opened. However, unless you're vacuum sealing it I wouldn't be confident in the viability of the second half.

Besides, one pack in 12 L of "standard" wort (~1.050) isn't even close to a dangerous over-pitch. In fact, if you don't rehydrate it - and apparently kill approx. half the cells - one pack would be pretty spot on the recommended pitching rate.

depends on your OG - anything over 1.060 i'd chuck it all in, lower, well half has worked for me many times.
