I am thinking of getting a second one, smaller and cutting to top off so I can tie it into a knot for dry hopping in my keg.

I have them with a draw string as well. Shhhh just don't tell anyone....

Just did my first brew with a hop sock today with Al (als_world). We were both very impressed!

I bent up a piece of stainless rod to act as a clip to hold it to the side of my boiler.

This worked very well. The hop sock got us more brew out of the boiler, and the boiler was sparkelling clean afterwards with only a rinse with the hose.

Al also worked out they are great for fancy dress if you want the "pope" look!

On an aside, we got all the grain, hops and a few extra bits and pieces from Ross (craftbrewer) and we were very impressed with the service. Great grain, great gear and prompt service. And all vacume packed within an inch of their life! Ross, what kind of machine do you have to suck all the air out? We could have used the grain as weapons!

There are two sizes - Al's head (large) and Jumbo. We chose the "Al's head" size for obvious reasons.

Well Pumpy, now that I've been using mine for about 1&1/2 months I hope I'm still not a Hop Sock virgin

Aside from the unimportant discolouration it looks good as new and works bloody brilliantly :super:

I drop a tablespoon in mine to keep it down and hang it from a piece of coathanger wire :)

hmmm, I think the one on the left bares the closest resemblance.

JJ's hop sock tip of the day ;) I bent up a clothes hanger and utilised the little holes on top of the keg, Hop sock hangs perfectly over the middle

I have been using my Jumbo sock for a few months now.
I am very impressed with the clear runoff from the kettle (and a little help from my RIMS :p ) but i still have a little concern with it.

During the boil, the hotbreak and hop crap seems to coat the filter. Those of you with one will understand when you have cleaned it yeah?

When i pick it up like a tea bag,the flow of bloody hot wort is definately restricted, thus makes me wonder if its really reduces utilization??
So every now and then i dunk it up and down and stir the contents of the sock.

Cheers

Yeah, pellets seem to do that to a certain (though not that great) degree for me, but I haven't had that problem with plugs.

What processed (unless you are using fresh flowers) form of hops are you using?

PZ.

I only use pellets when nothing else in that particular hop variety is available...I suggest you do the same ;)

I often catch my Hop Sock performing. Mainly Gillbert and Sullivan tunes. Aussie Idol here we come.

I had noticed the same thing, now I stick my immersion element inside the hop sock, dam I know the hops get boiled that way.

use a pair of silicone oven gloves to wring out the hop sock at the end and not burn your hands

So i gather i am not the only one who thiks it mat be restricting the extraction from the hops! hmmmmm.

I hold the hop sock over the kettle and wring it dry with tongs. I actually notice alot more hops in my brews since using the hop sock
