trying to come up with a bastardised Scottish strong ale recipe. Almost. India scotch ale, so far malt profile looks like attached. Just looking for a few thoughts as to if I am on the right track attachment=74480:ImageUploadedByAussie Home Brewer1409470594.452489.jpg] ImageUploadedByAussie Home Brewer1409470594.452489.jpg

IMHO, a good scottish ale doesn't need 6 different malts (despite what the yanks think)
something like the below malt bill will give a good deep coloured base for a Scottish Strong Ale
92% MO or Golden Promise
6% Medium Crystal
2% Roasted Barley

Then hop to whatever you're looking for

As sp0rk says, too complicated by half for a decent Scottish Ale.
Don't necessarily agree with his malt bill but some Flaked Barley wouldn't go astray when added minus his Crystal of course & sorry for that sp0rk. :p
You haven't yet stated what yeast but if using 1728 then a little Bairds Peated will help you get over the line smoke-wise.
Good luck with it Motabika

PS ---- You want hoppy Scottish then you will not have a decent Scottish & Isn't that what you're looking for????

Thanks guys, will play around with recipe some more, as per which yeast am thinking wyeast 1728

W1728 is the bomb. That recipie was designed especially for that yeast

I want to try and do something
Like a India Red Ale but with more of a Scottish ale
Backbone, might be clutching at straws but keen to try

For a nice Scottish of any percentage I'd sub the Crystal with 8.0 or 9.0% Flaked Barley, throw in around 4.0% Bairds Peated & ramp up to style using 1728 but like I say, that's just me. :)
Hops never need to be outlandish for this beer so just do the EKG\Fuggles thing to your preference.
