If I was to use one variety of hop for Belgian strong dark ale, what would you recommend? I know I should use two for bittering and flavour, but I'm on a budget. Damn. I'll be picking up 100g.
Either of the Goldings varieties ie. East Kent or Styrian. But they are going to be lower alpha, so not good for the budget.
Otherwise Target is known to be the number 1 UK bittering hop. Big alpha too! or N.B.
I'd throw in a vote for Saphir or Smieragard (sp?), both available from site sponsors, or one at least.
Noble hops and should have a reasonable alpha for you.
I used Sticklebract(sp?) in a belgian dark and its a really nice beer.
So, all S hops are my options for you
Styrian would also be a goof choice and I think Bramling Cross would be good too but there's a few more for you to consider...
