Have just started doing extracts using hop flower in the last month or so, early results have been good compared to kits containing isohops. Thinking of using hop pellets instead of flowers as easier to get .

Any advise with the difference in the end product.

i was thinking that maybe the flowers wouldnt break down as badly as pellets do. so you would need less filtering

I just place a fine sieve at the top of the fermenter when I pour the cooled wort out of my 20 lt pot . No problems with hop flower sediment. Beer as clear as commercial beer.

Bock, I have nothing to add except for..............nice avatar.
I agree :D

with pellets I used to use a fine mesh/cloth bag with a drawstring on it to
put my hops in for the boil. I now only use it for flowers, pellets get chucked straight in.
Still use it for dry hopping tho. Craftbrewer sell one similar or make your own.

I presume that you are using the hop flowers as aroma hops?

The alpha acid of the flowers can be pretty hard to measure so I'd take any alpha acid claims with a pinch of salt. The pellets are homogenised and the alpha acid content pretty damn close.

The flowers also age a hell of a lot faster so as long as you are buying and using them fresh they should be fine.

You just get a more stable and reliable product with the pellets as they all come from one big mixed batch so the individual characteristics of the where on the bine the cone grew, the weather conditions etc don't really really contribute much.

Pellets also give you access to more stable "foreign" varieties, I think I would be questioning the freshness of any amarillo flowers you were sold.

Thanks Wasabi , I'm using different flowers for bitterness and aroma , They must be fresh as the beer so far has been very good. Had a look at craftbrewer website and Ross seems to have fresh flowers at a good price. My usual supplier sells pellets in bulk also at a good price . That's why I asked the question. Thought the flowers will give better results
Will use the last of my flowers next batch then go to pellets and then see where the best results are.

....you and Gundaroo married to twin sisters? :p

Cheers

I think you would be questioning where they come from as well ;) Amarillo flowers are not commercially available in Australia...

cheers Ross

Edit: speeling

Dito  If they were amarillo cones one would suspect they are illegal imports.Quarantine guys dont like US flowers coming in.Only under strictest conditions.

I have been thinking about growing my own hop plants. Anyone else do this? Is it worth the effort? Are the plants easy to obtain?

Scott.
