I stirred immediately after underletting and then let it settle for a couple of minutes then started a really slow recirc. I'll try your method this week when I brew my American Porter.
 
Personally I wouldn’t worry about stirring when underletting but it’s added insurance and won’t hurt at all.
 
I underlet and stir, it gets rid of the trapped air so the liquid is in complete contact with the grains
