Hi,

I have tried boiling water and Sodium Perc to remove the gunk inside keg posts I am servicing.
90% has been removed, is there anything i can do to get the rest?

I am not sure of the substance that is in there, looks like it could be syrup from the soda days.

Might be rust? Hard to say though!

Worst case I will leave as is, been boiled twice now so should be sanitised enough but would like them as clean as i can get them.

If I recall, yob cleaned up some, i saw mention in another thread in the search but no clues as to how they turned out.

What about soaking in coke? That cleans coins up well.

Cheers,
D80

Coke cleans coins due to phosphoric acid, active ingredient in starsan so I'd try that rather than coke.

I tried citric acid yesterday in the keggle. It worked well. I didn't measure the ratio but acidic water heated for a short time just made the stains wipe off easily back to bright steel. Removed stains that I could'nt rub off with steel wool. Left overnight may lift it all off.

Thanks Dan, will head out to Coles today and pick some up. Worth a crack!

Thanks manticle, might hit them with Hot starsan in the meantime.

Nuke **** out them :)

Will let you know how it goes.

If you can physically remove some of the gunk it helps. It took me quite a while to get that crap off some of my kegs just recently. Sodium perc probably isn't enough, however I found that napisan that has detergents plus perc to be more effective. I also gave them a soak in CLR but I'm not sure it helped that much.

I definitely wouldn't use them until there spotless if theres still gunk in there it wont be sanitised, id try the citric acid/phosphoric to try and remove it, if that failed id just buy new posts.

Have had a few keg posts with a caramel build-up (probably from Cola syrup) best thing I found was a wire cleaning brush left over from when I shot pistols, the brush for the 357 worked a treat, should be able to get something similar at a sports store.
That and boiling caustic cleans of everything (except rust), just remember that boiling caustic will dissolve you to, be dam careful and do ware appropriate protection especially eye protection.

Do you know anyone with an ultrasonic cleaner to try it in? Or get one from ebay.
Never heard of one. Getting google foo on now.

Soak it in the sodium percarbonate solution for 24 to 48 hours. No need to boil. Otherwise soak in Carb Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) for the same time. Both will eventually remove the black from the bottom of a burn saucepan, but it takes time.

Trust me, this stuff is beyond the capacity of bi carb or perc.

Ok here is an update.
24 hours in a very strong starsan solution (started at boiling - big slurp of starsan and 500mls water).
6 posts soaked, now 98% clear. No floaties in the solution so assuming they were sizzled up.

Diluted the acid, and removed the posts. Quick once over with a spare tooth brush to break up the leftovers in the thread.

Back into a new batch of similar mix tonight to finish the job.

Thanks Manticle, seems to be doing the trick!

Cheers,
D80
