i'm wanting to make james squire golden ale,

but i'm not sure of the steps to making this recipe below, i have a 16lt stock pot, how much water do i start with? basically what would the steps be

Do i step the crystle first for 1/2 an hour at 66 degree, remove crysrle

then boil the ldme and 8gm POR and 2g amarillo for 60 mins

then with 20mins of the 60minute i add 10g of amarillo

then with 8 mins left i add the other 10g amarillo

then at flame out i just add the tin of Morgans Beer enhancer/extra pale malt

then add remain water to 23lts or how much liters

1.5kg Morgans Extra Pale liquid malt - added at flame out
500gm LDME (in the boil with the crystal)
250gm medium Crystal malt grain
8gm PoR (9.1%aa) for ~60min
2gm Amarillo (8.9%aa) for ~60 min
10g Amarillo for ~20min
10g Amarillo for ~8min

Hi Lynchman

For a simplified process it looks about right to me. I used to skip adding the can of extract to the pot and just used the boiled wort from the steeping and hops to dissolve it in the fermenter. But up to you.

A couple of comments on your recipe though. My quick calc of your hops comes to 19 IBU. Probably should aim for 30 IBU as the crystal will add too much sweetness. Also a flameout addition of Amarillo would almost be a required addition.

Look up Dr Smurtos golden ale of which he has an extract version for some tips.

Also, check out IanH who has posted a spreadsheet for working out kit and extract recipes. Works great!

You won't be making a very strong beer at all. My calcs say if you do it up to 23L you will get 2.75%.

For a 23L batch you should be looking at around 3kg of liquid malt extract + spec grains and sugar if you want higher alcohol %.

I would have a look at this recipe. It's a great recipe endorsed by many and was very tasty when I made it. It was my first extract brew and it was delicious!

Here's the extract recipe for DSGA.

1.5kg LME
1.5kg WME
250g caramalt or any light crystal
20g Amarillo @ 60, 15,5 mins.

thanx jacknohe

i'm just new to this, how much water do i start with i have a 16 lt pot?

Both the IBUs and alc are pretty low on the recipe as is. If you want to do it without really changing much do it with the same method in a 5L boil and top up to 18L. Should give you about 4.x% and 25 IBU. Less water to top up if you want both a bit stronger.

[EDIT: alc estimate assumes bottling]

Well hello,
it seems there are a lot people who are enthusiastic about brewing the goood stuff.

My question is regarding rice flakes,im attempting in the next day or so to partial
mash rice flakes, 500grams of pilsner and using amarillo hops in the schedule 60 mins
25mins and 5mins......has anyone experimented with rice flakes before and if so what was
the outcome?

Appreciate any replies.

Globe.

Thankyou for alerting my attention to this recipe by Dr Smurto and to the wonderful spreadsheet. Made the Dr Smurto extract recipe and it was very pleasant. The spreadsheet has also been very beneficial in working out future brews. Once again, thankyou to all concerned.

I have just done my attempted version of dr smurto's JSGA...BIAB style

this is what I did.

2.8 kg JW Trad

0.8 kg Weyerman Pale wheat

0.8 kg Weyerman Munich light

0.25 kg Weyerman caramunich 1

12 litres water 1 hour mash
went in at 77 dgrs
came out at 66 dgrs.
lots of squeezing of well hung bag
6 litres of water for sparge ( dunno if my brew talk is correct here. )

90 min boil

60 min 20 grms Amarillo pellets
15 min whirlfloc tablet

10 min 20 grms Amarillo pellets
5 min 20 grms Amarillo pellets

It's cooling down now , will put US-05 Yeast.
I didn't take a hydro reading yet ..too scared I'll end up with a brew full of glass and minute ball bearings.

yeah yeah .... :icon_cheers:

I am working off the 20 ltr BIAB one pot theory.

there is a hyrdo reading at 1 point that could really bring me undone.

bit worried about my JSGA/dr Smurto's clone.
My fermentation was getting a bit high on the weekend...24 -26.

Just that bloody hot in Sydney....I had it in the coolest part of the garage under my house as well.
