I am thinking about doing a first wort hop for an extract and steeped grain American IPA. Palmer talks about adding the hops to the brew pot and running the wort over them for half an hour or so, effectively allowing the hops to steep in the wort prior to the boil.
It would be easiest for me to heat water in the brew pot, add my grains in a grain bag, steep for 30 mins, remove the grains and then begin the boil. This way I avoid transferring hot wort. Could I add the first wort hops at the same time as the grain bag? Or should I wait to add the first wort hops after the grain has steeped? Steeping the grain and hops at the same time would save me half an hour which would be good.
