Hey guys,

My first AG ale has been in primary for about 10 days. Im not going to rack to secondary. My question is can you add finings into the primary a day or two before bottling to clear the beer up?

Will this ruin the beer?
what would you recomend? gelatine, polyclar etc?

Wont be a problem, I use gelatine (about 1/2 tbsp per 20l) disolved in about 3/4 cup of hot (not boiling) water and stired gently into the top.

Ive been thinking about doing this instead of adding it to the keg. How long do you wait before kegging or bottling after adding the gelatine?

A couple of days is about as long as you need.

To be honest I find it easier to add them to the keg. I just keg and chill. A few days before I want to drink I add the finings to the keg and pop it back in the fridge. I think you will get a clearer beer adding to the keg.

I am thinking of doing this for the IPA I brewed last week (Currently sitting in my 'NO-CHILL') Cubes, I have no space for anymore CC cubes however I have my fermenting fridge free.

Can I ferment my double batch (40 litres) for 7-10 days, then gelatine the brew while lowering the temp down to lager ferment temps (or lower) for another 5-7 days.

My only real concern would be having the brew sitting on the original yeast cake for 2 weeks, is this a problem?

I'll be using US-56

Cheers!

You can leave it on the yeast cake for up to months without any autolysis (i assume this is what youre thinking about), provided the yeast is good quality and you keep temperatures down below the mid-20s.

I left a Belgian in primary for a month with no problems, temperatures got up to mid-20s after the first couple of weeks.

Thanks Adamt, I thought as much but wanted to confirm before I did it.

Cheers!

Just reporting some results,

My IIPA has been in the bottle for a week and tastes green but wonderfull!. Its an amber colour and very clear. Was in primary for 4 weeks with finings added 4-5 days before bottling.

So finings in primary seems to cause no problems.
