hey all,

Will be putting down a simple APA (extract) made entirely with Amarillo hops in the next copule of day. I will be kegging it, but depending on the hop levels present I may dry hop the keg with some of the left over hops (pellets).

Since i have not really dry hopped a keg before i was just looking for some info on the methods used. I was thinking 20g of amarillo or so in either a hop bag (if i can get one) or some cheese cloth.

My main concern is the addition of the hop bag. Should I try to sanitise the hops and hop bag some how or will the alcohol already in the keg prevent any infections??

Anyt thoughts appreciated.

Sloth.

I just throw the hop pellets into the bottom of a fermenter and rack the beer into it for secondary for about a week. Most of the hop peices sink, some bits dont and may get into te bottles (or keg) but im not too bothered.

20g would probably be a good place to start. most people recommend about 1g/L dry. I havent dry hopped enough times to get a decent idea of how much you need.

Spend the cash and get a hop bag and just dump it in the keg. Sterlise if you're paranoid. Works fantastically mate, i love it!!!!

Don't just drop loose pellets into keg, done it once, 1/3 thru keg, pick up completly clogged with hops.
One wasted keg

That would have been unfortunate.

I said into a fermenter for secondary not straight into the keg.

1 gm/L is a good starting point, but with APA's I use 50 to 60gms. My Ruination Ale had 60gms at flame out & was dry hopped with 56gms this morning - put loose, straight into the secondary for 5 to 7 days & then filtered straight into the keg.

cheers Ross

Just finished an English bitter dry hopped with 25 grams Styrian Golding whole flowers .

Yes I will be dry hopping in the future my ales

Pumpy :)

sorry to hear about it normell.

THanks for the help guys, might increase the amount of hops a bit but I'll gonna try it first without dry hopping, hence cant dry hop secondary. Will dry hop the keg only if I think its lacking. Time to scrounge around for something to use as a hop bag....

Cheers, Sloth.
