Guys.

About 4 days ago I dry hopped in secondary.

Just through a pinchful of cascade pallets directly in the fermentor when racking.

Big problem is that it seems to have to have broken apart but it looks like bits of green dirt are floating on the top.

Last night I threw in the finings, but they have dissolved or floated down to the bottom, even with the finings.....

Is this alright to bottle as in will it settle to the bottle or should I bring up the temp again and give a bit of swirl - current temp about 8-12 degrees for cold conditioning.

Cheers.

I did exactly as you have done some time ago except i kegged. I ended up with some floaties in my beer because not all of the hops will sink to the bottom, and the ones that do will most probably become aroused when transfering to the bottle.
I use a muslim bag now.
I think maybe you could uses a inline filter and rack to another vessel before bottling. GMK uses an irrigation inline filter, like the ones bunning sell i think. Could be worth a try.

cheers

I normally dont drink before 6 weeks in the bottle surely this will settle by then?

**** I am filthy at myself.

Drew - do you bulk prime or prime each bottle. I dry hop probably 90% of my brews by throwing in a handful of pellets into secondary and never had floaties in my bottles. If you bulk prime you will be able to leave all the crap behind in secondary when you rack again. If you dont bulk prime I would suggest racking again....very carefully so you dont disturb the gunk at the bottom.....honestly its no drama.... just rack again and she'll be right.

Best bet is to use a hop sock/tea bag, no floaties then

Its floating around the top though :( Seems to go in about 3 inch's or so but could be in further.....

To dry hop you just measure out X amount of sugar dont you, put it in the fermentor and then chuck ur tubing in and that provides enough swirling to mix it doesnt it? - And bottle straight away?

I recommend the GMK inline filter, works a treat.

Even if a few bits of hops get into the bottles its not really anything to get worried over, they won't hurt.

They should sink to the bottom reasonably quickly aye?

And if some beers are more bitter then others well I guess thats about it aye?

Dry hopping adds aroma, it won't effect bittering.

When i've bulk primed (from secondary which was dry hopped) most of the hop debris stayed in secondary but if I also catch a bit in the inline filter.

Search for "Inline Filter" to find the topic with pics and instructions. Only costs about $5-$10 to make from memory.

Drew - mine float on top too. When you rack again they for some reason spread out to the side and stick to the walls of the fermenter. If you want to bulk prime, measure up some sugar, dissolve in a bowl of 250mls boiling water, pour into your third fermenter, coil your racking tube in the bottom, rack away and the coil creates a whirlpool and mixes in the liquid sugar. Let me know what you are making, how many litres and i can tell you how much sugar to use.
Cheers

Drew,

It's better to dissolve the sugar with some boiling water before putting it in the second fermenter or the sugar may not mix in well. A few hundred mls of water should be fine. No need to let it cool down first, but no problem if it does of course.

This link will take you to an airlocked thread on bulk priming. The calculator there is very handy I think. Thanks BeerisGood. :super:

Steve, it was just a standard Coopers Lager, with Coopers Brew Enhancer 2, 20-21 litres off the top of my head.

Cheers.

Cant download that its on a work cpu which doesnt allow downloads, cheers.

Stick it in a muslin bag, works for me everytime. Actually I've been doing the same lately when boiling up my bittering hops which has been producing excellent results as well. Especially at clean up time. :)
