Hey guys I had an idea for a fun brew with IPA flavour but low ABV for drinking large volumes in the summer. Wonder if you can give me any advice on the recipe as I haven't made any of my own recipes yet. (partial/extract as I don't have AG equipment)

Drinking Game IPA 23L
1.7kg can Coopers Australian Pale Ale
400g Carapils steeped for 30min
15g Chinook @10min
15g Chinook @dry
30g Citra @dry
Nottingham yeast @19 degrees
OG 1.025
FG 1.005
ABV 2.8%
IBU 32

Why not get a can of Coopers IPA.......more likely to have IPA flavour than a Pale Ale can.

And I will attest that it does make a half decent beer*

* as far as cans go.

What do you do to improve the Coopers IPA Can? Because I just opened the first bottle of a batch I made with it and was pretty underwhelmed on the flavour front.

I'd have a look at a fresh wort kit, grain and grape in Melbourne do a nice IPA one. 17ltrs at 1.062 and 60 ibu.

Dilute it down to about 1.046 and do a mini boil with some of the wort. Could buy a pack of cascade and do a mini boil to bring it back up to 60-65 ibu's and use the rest for aroma or dry hop

Too much bitterness on low alc % IPA's stands out like dog's balls. I myself can't speak to how to get it right, but I've tried about 20 commercial ones and few of them get it right. It just ends up too bitter and perceived as astringent. I'd love to get a good session IPA reciped down, but I'm nowhere near yet.

Wouldn't a 'session' IPA really be a rather bitter APA? :D

I guess it could be, but at 2.8%ABV this is looking like a lot lower than most APA

That's a really good point and being unbalanced is kind of the reason I was looking for suggestions.
I was hoping that by using steeping grains I'd get more malt flavour to balance the bitterness without the hike in alcohol. Is carapils the right thing for this or would I be better off with a darker crystal malt?

Carapils would be used to give more 'mouthfeel', a bit more chew. Rather than use carapils a lot of people will simply mash at a higher temp. I've never used extract though so maybe it's a done thing? For your purpose I would go crystal.

Not sure what you are going for is going to be any good though
