I was looking at making up a Citra Ale of sorts to try out Citra
Put a few things together in Ian's spreadsheet as per below
How do think this would go &/or would you change anything ?

50L batch

3KG Pale Malt
1KG light dried malt
500gm light Crystal
1.5KG Dex
500gm Maltodextrin

10L Boil @ 1040
Citra 11.1% 20gm @ 60 min
Citra 11.1% 20gm @ 20 min
Citra 11.1% 20gm @ 15 min
Citra 11.1% 20gm @ 10 min
Citra 11.1% 20gm @ 5 min

What ABV you hoping for?

That will only be about 3.85%. Looks good if that's what you are after.

Ian's spreadsheet says it would be 4.1% in keg
It would be nice to get it to around 4.5% but I could live with 4.1%
Maybe a bit more Dex & LDM ?

Actually I have the Bulk Prime set to off ?
I`m thinking of upping the LDM from 1KG to 1.5KG & Ian's spreadsheet brings that up to 4.5%

I was just going off Beersmith so I would say we are both in the right sort of area for it. :icon_cheers:

Bumping the DME up like you say should work fine. :icon_chickcheers:

I just made this up today using 1.5kg instead of the 1kg of LDM
Looks & smells great .....
OG was 1049
Looking forward to it .....

Bugger! Was going to suggest less crystal and unfermentables, it might end a bit cloying (sweet...).

But you're in.

Should be fine.

If you're not used to Citra, when it's done fermenting, give it a couple of days, the taste straight out of the fermenter might alarm you... It'll mellow.

The last citra IPA I brewed (which went down a treat at the taphouse brewshare) had a bit of wheat, a bit of Munich/Vienna and a teeny bit of caramunich (1% i think), with a similar hopping schedule + dry hops.

This recipe looks pretty spot on as well - make sure you post results!

I was listening to the BN's recent podcast with the head brewer from Sierra Nevada. He stated that when the y brew the Torpedo they use only magnum during the boil and minimal citra during the dry hop stage due to the ultra high alpha oils fromt the citra. They are the ones that made this hop what it is today.

Yep, the recipe for SN Torpedo only calls for 1 x 17g dry hop addition of Citra.
Bittering is Magnum, then Magnum and Crystal @ 5mins, then the Magnum + Crystal + Citra for dry hops.

I was surprised at how much the Citra does come through.

After going through 90g of Citra in a few different brews I reckon the most dominant flavour is Lychee, followed closely by Rosewater.

It's a wicked hop.

I am actually a Citra convert !! It was only I found a bag of citra hops in the "cheap" tray at the LHBS and a little thought about flavour characteristics that made me think of Asia and citrus.. Put it in my street beer and kicked the grandfinal winning goal!! A beautiful hop!!

I used it in place of Riwaka, on the recommendation of Craftbrewer (who were out of Riwaka at the time).

Tasted after 4 weeks (but not carbonated) - fantastic smell and aroma. It and Nelson Sauvin are my new fave hops.

This is the recipe I put it in, really simple SMASH..

Do you guys think Citra would work in an Amber ale? Any recipes?
