Can someone tell me (who has used them before) how full the can is supposed to be? The last brew i did that got infected consisted of the light malt extract shown below. When i opened the can it wasnt full to the top like the kit cans usually are, and was about an inch from the top. I would have thought a the smaller cans (instead of the large normal 1.7kg ones) would have been full as well....but its a smaller can + had an inch less extract in it.

This is the can im talking about i used last time.

I've never bought one before so I have no real idea, but it sounds like it could be worthwhile weighing the cans before you open them!

Yeah the last two I used were like that. The date was 018/07 on the bottom.
I didn't get an infection.

I used one for the first time last week and it was full like the kits are.

352/06 means that the can was made on the 352nd day of 2006.

I use this stuff all the time and have never noticed one that wasn't full, though I must say I haven't actually checked exactly for this.

Will keep an eye out next time though, thanks.

The reason the level in the can may go down is because the malt inside is under 'Vacuum like conditions' therefore when the can is opened to the atmosphere the can expands and with this greater volume created by this the level in the can goes down..

this may be totally wrong but just putting it out there]

If your that worried about infections just boil with 2L of water for a minimum of 10 mins. It also gives you a chance to add some hops for some extra flavor and aroma..

seems a lot of inconsistent results here....some are getting full cans and others not.

animal man, can u report back later how your brew went? (infected or not)
thanks.

heres an experiment for ya. Weigh it when you get it,weigh the empty can and see what you are really getting.
Email coopers, they have been helpful with most queries in the past for many on here.

You'll probably find the numbers are a batch or day number ie 18th batch 2007 or 18th day 2007, batch 352 2006 or 356th day 2006.

I'd say boil away if you're worried about it being the cause of an infection. More likely to be a filled to a weight spec though and vacuumed. (I could be full of ***** too so ask Coopers, would be the best bet :) )

Yep. The dates are days of the year. So mine was made on the 18th of Jan.
352 is about the 18th of dec.

I emailed coopers last night and received a reply this morning.

They say that their cans are supposed to be full to the top, and that they will replace the can that i used. :beerbang:

I asked about it causing an infection in a brew and they replied:

Malt extract cans are filled at around 70C and the temperature remains above 60C for at least 12 hours which means they are self-pasteurising. If there was an infection in the can you would have known that as soon as you opened it.

So always write down the dates on the cans...(lesson learnt)

Just weighed a couple of cans of coopers and a couple of morgan's cans both morgans and coopers cans are the same net weight 1.5kg both have the same diameter cans, but the coopers cans are longer in length between 1cm to 2cm, gross weight is comparitive for the extra length of can. Also so I have alway noticed a small gap at the top when opening and always saw it as normal about 1cm.

Further claification from Coopers :
The 1.5kg Malt Extract cans do look like they are a bit short of
product because the can is slightly taller than it needs to be in order to
accommodate the product. This is to ensure that there is no spillage before
the base is put on and seamed. This is only an appearance of being
low-filled, the cans weigh the correct amount because they would be rejected
prior to labelling.
