I've upgraded to a STC-1000 but I got a 50W fully submersible fish tank heater (note some can't go completely underwater). I just give it a clean with pink stain before and after use. Infact I have one in now since the fermenting fridge is outside and its getting too cold for the ale.

The only problem is you need to get the cord through the fermenter lid. I did mine by cutting the standard plug off, drilling a hole the size of the cord in the fermenter lid and fit gromet, pass cord through and wired it up to a new plug (get a sparkie to do this so you don't fry yourself on the 240V). It sealed perfectly airtight, however you are stuck with it there untill you get the sparky back to remove it (then just cover hole with duct tape till next winter).
