Sinkas

I used to buy a lot of mead. For a while it was all my wife could drink due to a bad reaction to histamines in wine.

There are commercial meads around.

Unfortunatlly they are all crap. The most common is maxwell mead and that is foul.

The only meadery with products worth drinking (Mount Vincent in Mudgee) closed down when the mead meker retired and her kids weren't interested in keeping it running. :(. I have what may well be the last 3 bottles of Mt Vincent in existence in my cellar at the moment. One is a sweet mead that will be drunk mulled this winter. The other 2 are a fortified liquer that will also be consumed this year. Once they are gone there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

There are a couple of others around (or used to be a few years ago) but they are hard to get and generally not worth it.

I am curerntly experimenting to try to make my own.

Cheers
Dave

I was only reading this site today about making mead  .

This at the bottom of the page put me off a little: Besides which, the longer you leave your mead, the nicer it will taste. I personally never bottle before a year, even if the ferment finished in 6 months :(

Hi Case

Some friends of mine got some from somewhere down Denmark way a while back I will try and find out where for you. I do remember it was pricy and only in the pretty 375ml desert wine bottles.

there is chateau dorien in the barossa that has some reasonable ones

Well Done Barls.

Chateau Dorien does indeed have/make Mead.
Quite a few - a couple are Real Good.

Especially the Grand Miele.

Bindi,
Ask 'Berapnopod' about meads.
He gave me a sample of a killer he made (3yr old) and he has made quite a few different types of mead.
I too wanna make one. Trying to get it together to age one in oak barrell.
cheers

I'll third that with the Chatau Dorrien Meadery. The jaffa style Grand miele is brilliant. If you can get cheap honey it's worth trying. The drought has pushed honey prices a bit high over the last few years. I'm getting 12kg of mixed blend honey from a friend with hives at One Tree Hill soon to give a couple of styles a try (Melomel & braggot). At a very nice price too. He does want to try some when it's done of course.

Another source of commercial mead is Honey Haven in Mudgee. They have a few for sale there. They make a local straight mead, as well as a spiced mead and a fortified mead. There is also a very delicious fortified mead on sale in a clear bottle. It comes in at around 22%. Every time I go through Mudgee I stop there, try it out, and ask how they make it. Its fun 'cos I get a different answer every time.

First I heard they make it purely by fermentation - to 22%! Second time I heard that *all* mead was distilled. Then I heard they don't really know whats in it 'cos it comes from Victoria (the most likely explanation). Then I heard it was fortified with brandy.

In any case, I get a strong peach flavour in there and its very nice.

Berp.

I think there are a couple of Danish ones, but 'Dansk Mjd' (Danish Mead) is the biggest, I think. I've tried a few of theirs and those have been really good.

I don't know if they will send internationally, but I would guess they do. They have an English page here: Danish Mead

If they won't send internationally, I think I could probably do something about getting some and sending it to Australia. :)

Cheers,

Jens-Kristian

Dansk Mjd make same damn tasty meads.

I've tried their Gl. Dansk Mjd and Vikingernes Mjd.

The Vikings mead was my favourite, heres my notes:

Strong alcoholic spicy honey nose. Nice teardrops in the glass like a fine port or wine. Gold in colour. Sweet honey, no harsh alcohol. Just warming. Lovely sweet honey, and spice. Great stuff.

if you havent already had a look check gotmead.com out. quite abit of info on the site.
the only meadery in australia they list is maxwell however... :(

The only meadery with products worth drinking (Mount Vincent in
Mudgee) closed down when the mead meker retired and her kids weren't
interested in keeping it running.

I was reading through a few old brewing magazines (Home Brewer) which was
published in the early '90's and there was a feature in one about Mt Vincent. Jane
Nevell was the meadmaker and a long time ago I was shares in a slow racehorse
with her husband, John, the local dentist.

I grew up in Mudgee and as a nineteen year old (40 years ago!!) my mum and I
used to make the treacherous trip up Mt Vincent and spend a few hours sampling
Jane's mead. Good stuff but the trip back into town was a dicey affair.

The Home Brewer article was mainly about a new product she had called 'Skal'
which was being promoted as a mead ale. She used Pride of Ringwood (only
7 ounces in 300 gallons!) and the local honey.

My mum still lives in Mudgee and I'm going up in couple of weeks. I think she has
a couple of bottles still hidden away.

Home Brewer had a recipe for the Skal Ale which was pretty basic. Anyone who
would like the recipe feel free to PM me with an email address and I'll send it on.

Cheers,
Phil

GMK

I'm always on the lookout for new meads and this si one I haven't come across before.

Any idea whether this is available outside the Barossa? Preferably in Sydney? Much as I'd love to travel to the Barossa regularly I'm afraid budget and family prevent it.

Cheers

G'day ausdb, I'm going past there Saturday, so I'll have to drop in and try a few in the range, and get some info too. I'll post it as soon as I get back online, probably Sunday nite.
Cheers

edit: Saturday

Maxwell in McLaren Vale SA make a mead and a spiced mead.

Both are quite OK.
