Brewing on saturday, threw in the 1st hop addition.
Not long after I noticed multiple dark bits racing around in the boil, not a good look.
1st thought was, it's burning on the element or something.
On closer inspection they were seeds.
Checked the hops and sure enough they had seeds all through them.
Planted about 8 in the garden and the rest went in the next few hop additions...
Had bought the cluster hop flowers from the brew shop that morning as they were on special at $6.50 for 90g.
Mainly just an interesting happening.
Happened to anyone else?
Any comments on effect or nill effect to the brew?
See pic of turb with seeds.
Cheers.

Off topic but where did you get that grill thing for the bottom of your kettle?

Hi Mark,
I got lucky when I bought my 2nd hand 40ltr birko for $70.
Had been modified with this stainless steel grill.
Works great to keep the grain bag away from the element.
Seller said it was welded up by an engineer.

Fair go GB, I'm an engineer, and I weld. :p

Back on topic, I didn't think the female hop flowers had seeds?

I planted a cluster hop rhizome this year too, currently growing into a jungle. Wonder if I'll get seeds in the flowers too?

You should be looking forward to some awesome fresh hops jwsparkes.
Grew chinook hops last year with great results, no seeds, the plant is way bigger this year.
As far as I know unless there is a male plant around there will be no seeds.
zomes we buy for growing hops are female as they are just taken from another female plant.

If I get any to grow from the seeds some will be female and some will be male.
I hope a male grows then I will let it pollenate my chinook or por plants.
See what sort of seeds that makes...

Id be taking the hops (if there are any left) back to the shop for a refund or at least an explanation. Thats very bizarre. Not sure what impact using the wrong sex hops will have on your beer? Never heard of it before.
Cheers

They won't be male, Steve. They will be female flowers that have been pollinated by a male plant. Nontheless, I wonder if the seeds will impart any wierd flavours to the brew?
Cheers, John.

Also will the AA% be the same as a non pollinated hop?

Seemed to taste fine when I took an OG reading and taste test.
I will report when I test the beer.
Hopefully it wont taste seedy...

If the beer tastes ok I won't be complaining to the brew shop.
Will ask them about it out of intrest next time I am go.

The beer will be fine. A lot of NZ flowers seem to have seeds. Gerard M from Paddy's had seedlings growi9ng in his driveway at one stage from hop flower residues he swept out of his garage.

I am pretty sure that the "cascade" rhizomes that get sold amongst home brewers on here and on ebay originated from NZ seeds as well.

When they take a sample of hops to analyze for AA %, the seeds are included in that sample so you shouldn't have to adjust your weights.
