As an internet forum,with probably many IT folk as members,was curious on peoples thoughts on Senator Stephen Conroy's proposal for "The great firewall of Australia".

While I think his intentions are admiral,I don't think censorship at ISP level will affect these goals.It will however force up the price of connections and slow speed significantly

Once censorship is legislation it is almost impossible to remove.Sites like this may well be added to the "do gooders" black list.A slippery slope indeed

The question is whether governments should have the right to censor the internet, good intention or not. It's a question of at what point, within a liberal system, does the private 'realm' of a person's life begin? Most if not all people would argue that, to a large extent the internet would be included, barring major crimes being committed. However, what the filter will achieve is most likely a filtering of the usage of law abiding internet users while those who download child porn etc etc will just use peer-to-peer systems which are virtually impossible to filter out at the IP level- especially if it's direct peer-to-peer.

Peas and corn,my point exactly.ISP filtering will take 30 seconds to breach,but slow our connections(for no good reason)for the next xx years.

"Think of the children" is just a nice talking point in the ALP data pack.When debate discovers their lame manipulations"think of the children" is their catchcry.

AS you said peds and other sickos will continue to use protcols other then http.They will also learn about ssl tunnels,and when the blacklist of the commonwealth of Australia is leaked they will have every site they want.
