It should be ok, might end up sweeter than you expect. I usually dont exceed 5-7% of a medium Crystal for an APA. My next beer an AAA will push 9-10% medium and dark crystals which will end up quite sweet. Modeled on JZ Red rocket Clone... :)

+1 Ill go max 10% crystal at a push normally.. But hey, each to their own B)

Im drooling in anticipation to brew it! I recieved my 4 kegs today, (thanks Ross) so i have some serious brewing on my hands!

Im out of Horizon and no centennial (should have ordered when i got my kegs.) Im going Chinook for bittering and amarillo/cascade for flavour and aroma. Thinking of subbing the Amarillo for Simcoe... unsure at this point. My IBU's are out and Colour slightly off to jamils recipe. ive decided to back it off to a 6%er as i want to be able to down a pint and not fall asleep. :D

This is the draft so far.

I was supposed to pop my cherry today.... but instead what i thought was a corked thigh from oztag last nite turned out to be a torn quad. <_<

It's a little hard walking around let along having to lift anything

I'm hoping that sunday will be the day as I'll be able to have some help with lifting when people are home

Also, Congrats on the jump Chappo

Cheers, Sponge

Yeah, I agree with that. Ive been temped to go big on an AAA but always go abck to the recipe and tinker the next day. Besides i dont want to drink sump oil unless its rye. :icon_drool2:

awesome chappo.... Your making me get more excited about my soon to be AG setup.. damn expensive to put together though.. its harder to get $$ out of the missus while organising a wedding..

great pics.

Not expensive to set up for BIAB mate, all you need is a big pot, then if you like you can upgrade to a three vessel later.. B)

Chappo Lost Virginity To First Ag Brew

That must have hurt your willy!

In all seriousness, doing the first AG demystifies it a heap, and there's the need to make another... and another!!

Cheers Gava,
You'll get there mate just ditch the wedding that's just an excuse for all your free loading mates to get hammered instead of you! Jokes but seriously I hear you loud and clear on the set up side $. I reckon I wouldn't get much change from $1500. But I have gone all new gear and bought the best that I could. I knew I was pretty serious about this little obsession and did want to regret buying something half baked if you know what I mean.

$365.00 to set up for BIAB... with a 60ltr pot, rambo burner, Biab brewer bag, pully's.... already had 6 fermenters etc.

BWaahahaha!

Your dead right about the "demystifies" P&C. I sat there in the man cave dead set wondering why I hadn't done this earlier. If your able to Kits and bits AG is a walk in the park really. I reckon the more you read, mainly because of the technical aspects (BTW that should come later) you can easily talk yourself out of it...

Only cost me $100 for a 30 litre pot, $20 for a bag, got a 2 ring burner for free and bobs your uncle B)

Theres a few BIAB'ers in NZ, mainly me tho and I plug it all the time over in our forums :D I actually did a brew day at mine a couple of weeks ago and converted a few K&K brewers which I was stoked about!!

Edit : The whole "demystifies" thing is exactly why I did a brew day, cos alot of the time people get caught up in the technical jargon and just get waaaay to confused thinking this whole thing is really difficult, but then you see it done and think "I can do that!"

HERETICS the both of Ya!

Naah, BIAB's all good Chappo! If it wasn't for BIAB I wouldn't have done my first AG last weekend, makes everything simple! None of this RIMS/HERMS/HLT stuff, I still don't know what they all mean. :(

I might get complicated later on if I get a bigger place, but for my unit, BIAB works good for me. :D

Purely stirring the pot and no one bit... Well except you!

Sorry if I offended none was meant, actually it's a pretty hard line some hold on the subject which amuses me. Actually I've been wanting to get to BribieG's for sometime and see what all the fuss is about. He BIAB's and swears by it. Actually he won the last BABBS mini-comp with his BIAB brew. I must try to pin him down at the next BABBS meeting (sorry note to self there). I think it would pretty nieve, even for me ;) , to slam something I have never seen, tasted and or experienced. I actually think the whole BIAB thing makes really good sense especially when you have limited time and or space.

One brilliant hop not to overlook in an American Pale Ale or Amber is BSaaz from NZ. It's not at all like European Saaz, more of a Cascade / Amarillo etc. I did a very late hop with BSaaz hop tea the other day before bottling an American and the hop aroma was incredible, it was like I had walked into the Little Creatures brewery at flame out :icon_drool2: To me, the great advantage is that it's available in flowers so can be used in the hopsock or to make hop tea for late hopping.

BTW Ross stocks Crown Urns now at a very nice price, about sixty bucks less than I paid for my Birko and only $15 postage. You can set up a nice BIAB outfit for far less than $300. Once you get your bag and a few other bits it's almost a "turn key" brewery. However there's nothing like looking at a top end three vessel setup .... pure brew porn :icon_cheers:

If someone already has an esky I reckon they would go pretty close to going AG for that money too.

:icon_offtopic: I reckon a great idea for a thread/sticky would be a list of the bare minimum parts (with pictures of course) needed to get into AG/BIAB. Along with a short explanation of how to use it. As a newbie (who now finally has a handle on it) this would be soooooo much better than "Just read John Palmer's How to Brew".

Cheers,
Jake
