I've just been informed that I have a work assignment in Canberra for 4 weeks.

Myself and 2 others have arranged for 3 cases of wine to be driven down from our Sydney home cellers to save some money.
Company expenses ony go so far!
Tha covers about 1/2 the wine.

So does anyone have a list of brew pubs for Canberra? or maybe a decent pub that has imported beer in bottle.

It would be greatly appreciated.

Wig and Pen in the city or there are several at green square Kingston.

...Wig and Pen Tavern & Brewery......Richard Watkins is not only one of the very best craftbrewers in the country, but he is a champion bloke as well...

...and Christoph Zeirholz is keeping busy out in his Brewery at Fyshwick...

The Wig and Pen has been around for 15 years or so. The beer is nothing short of spectacular, we are very lucky in in Kanbeera. The Kingston Hotel has a range of Squires on tap, DEbacle in Braddon gets some great beers but pricey, The Transit Bar (a backpackers joint and walking distance from the Wig) has great beers, The Ainslie has Schwartz Beer on tap walking distance from the Wig further the Zeirholz Brewery in Fyshwick is good (grab a bite to eat as well) and Fyshwick is renowned for its Brothels (more than dozen) and equal number of marital aids shops.
There is a Belgium Cafe in Kingston and the Durham is well worth a visit. For takeaways visit Canberra best beer shop Plonk on the outskirts of Fyshwick (Griffith I think even though it is in the "Fyshwick Markets")
The list keeps going on.......

Thanks guys,

That should get me started. 4 weeks in Canberra is a rather long stint.
The wine supply will run out rather quickly.

Coincidently I will be in Canberra early next week.

Wig and Pen is number one on my list and Debacle seems to have a good list of brews on offer.

Does anyone know about All Bar Nun? I was just checking out the website and it seems pretty nice, especially with Old Speckled Hen on tap...never seen that outside the UK.

Plonk is in Fyshwick but it on the Kingston end, away from the main part of Fyshwick.

I was locked up in Canberra for a while too...

Went to most of what is listed

Zierholz Premium Brewery was my favourite. Christoph was very hospitable and took me on a tour and chatted for ages about our love of brewing and heavy music. Even gave me a chinok rhizome!

They say Fyshwick is the Kings Cross of Canberra... but I couldn't see it. Sure there were brothels and porn shops, but they were seperated by harvey norman, sleep city and just your standard industrial shops. Not the Vegas Strip of porn, fireworks, hookers and gangsters I was geed up to expect. Bof a shame really!

I think debacle had OSH on tap from memory? Mind you it also had a beer menu bigger than the food menu... 2 A4 pages plus a large backboard of specials

The Wig and Pen is, IMO, probably the best brewpub in the country (especially when it comes to English-style ales). Some of the experimental seasonals Richard makes are second to none (the RIS, obviously, but i also loved the chocolate and elderberry stout last winter). Top stuff.

+1 on the Zierholz Brewery on Kembla street in Fyshwick

Top notch food, and the BEER! 9 taps flowing of all different styles. Something for everyone.

Trust me... try the Hopmeister.

And is Wheat Beer is your kinda thing, I believe Christoff brews the best one in the country.

PM Me if you guys are interested in catching up there for a beer.

I agree with everything that has been said above.

Try and get to a Canberra Brewers meeting, as well - 1st Thursday of the month.....hang on.....that's today!

Ahh yes, and many, many fine brews were sampled.... *burrrrppp*

Ok, flying down for the Canberra International Music Festival in the morning and after I settle in it will be "Beer- O- Clock", not sure where the first day BUT when the Wig and Pen opens at 2pm on Saturday [If my program does not change ;) ] it will be time to taste a few.
I am already meeting a few AHB guys so it will be fun.

Im in Canberra this weekend, seems Wig and Pen has closed down :(
any recommendations for some interesting brews ?

We were down in canberra last weekend and I can confirm the Wig & Pen was still open.

The barman rolled his eyes when I enquired about them closing down. Everyone's been coming in saying they're here for last drinks.
He pretty much said they're still open and haven't heard anything about being kicked out yet...

Tried their Spiced Old ale. The hopback was filled with truffles and other stuff. Strange but enjoyable.
And the IPA was great too.

But someone should tell them to fix up their website. I forgot.

from the speculation and neglected website I thought the W & P had closed, Ill be getting some in then, the Debacle". Lonsdale street, looks a cracking beer menu also, cheers
