Last year we had about a dozen or so people turn up at The Riverview Hotel in Balmain to enjoy a few pints of the Braidwood ESB, straight out of the handpump. I thought we should do it again. The Braidwood Ales are now being brewed under contract by Matt Donellan at his St.Peter's Brewery. The St Peters Blonde is now also on tap at The Riverview.

This time around I have organised for Matt to be there for the afternoon, so come along with a few questions ready, and enjoy a pint or two. Or three!

Where - Riverview Hotel, Birchgrove Road Balmain
Date - Saturday July 22nd from 2pm

Cheers
Gerard

Linz,

Is there a shortcut to Balmain from Camden , I had to start out at seven in the morning and did not get back until two in the morning, Duff had drank most ofthe beer last time and I was only left with the slops !!

Pumpy :(

Found the Braidwood ESB on tap at the Royal Cricketers Arms on saturday night... Just didn't get a chance to try it... Bloody designated driver!

Andrew,

I've had the ESB at the Cricketers twice before and there's something wrong with it. I don't recommend tasting it there for the first time. Not sure if its die to not being cellared properly or if it's been sitting there a while, maybe there's a new keg on?

When I questioned it's taste, the bloke behind the bar said "they've slightly changed the recipe" or something along those lines which is ********. The Hills Brewers did the Braidwood day only a couple of weeks from when I was at the Cricketers last and my ESB turned out a heap better than what they were serving, not as good as what's at the Riverview (i used a different yeast to the original) but there was definately something funny about what was being served at the Cricketers.

Thanks Sam, I'll take that into consideration now... Maybe I won't go up there to try it <_<
Hopefully be able to find the time to get down there next weekend if I can shake this bug I've unfortunately picked up.

Cheers,
Andrew

Well that was a pretty enjoyable afternoon, great to catch up, & put names to faces. When a pub has no pokies, pool table, juke box or TAB, you know you are in a beer drinkers pub. It was interesting to taste the difference after Lizzie ducked down to the cellar & changed the Braidwood keg. One local used the term "rent-a-crowd" as he squeezed his way through the bar, I gather saturday arvo's are generally a little quieter than that. Pete Wadey may have been in the poop when he got home, not sure of the depth, but if you are looking for a 2nd hand mash tun or kettle send him a quick PM
cheers

Yes well the beer did smell good, :( No show from pumpy??? Hot gossip is he was avoiding the local constabulary who had threatened to drag him out on his ear...

I'm curious; anyone know the abv for this one?

Cheers

The wort we bought back from Braidwood, in Jan 06, wa about 1043. Scotty, as I remember said that it varied just a little bit between 1043 and 1045. Which is interesting in that this puts it more in the SB rather than ESB range - if that really matters.

Assuming normal attenuation (?) for the yeast, this means an ABV of 4.4%

I'm expecting that Matt has adjusted the ratios to achieve the same result since the move to St Peters?

Boozy ,

I did let Linz know I was "Financially Embarrassed "

Pumpy :)

Bummer i missed this one.
ironically, i was in Balmain for the day, carrying out a little pub crawl of sorts. We got to the London, town hall, welcome and an indian restuarant for dinner... i had the riverview on my list, but we missed the stop on the bus.. and the girls said no to walking back up the hill in heels (and it was feed time). grrrr.

i'll try again next time.

I am recycling a thread, but maybe the renovation of the Riverview deserves a new thread of it's own.

Just back from a very enjoyable lunch at The Riverview with White Rabbit flowing freely. the food was spectacular. Keep an eye out for their up-coming beer lunches.

Hey GMF
just checked the new website..... hmmmmm swanky, bit of a shame in my eyes really..!
i loved the 'ole english pub' of the OLD Riverview.
Spent a few lazy sunday arvo's reading the paper and swilling some Braidwood in the old lounges in the corner.

Guess it just becomes another of the 'sterile stainless' crew for me.

Is the hand pump still present...?

Cheers
