Many years ago I applied for a research grant to do just that. You can condition rats to sniff out land mines, however to train the rats without using negative reinforcement is a real issue, and nobody wanted to fund a project that would zap rats with electrcity to train them to be blown up later. Blowing off limbs and killing people however appears to be more acceptable, little animals is a no no. Sorry about the rant but having seen some of the worse places on earth for landmines, Afghanistan, Laos and Cambodia, it is an issue that really gets me hot under the collar.
