Historical styles such as gruit contained no hops and were flavoured with herbs and spices.

Some might say "Budweiser" (or insert generic lager here...)

I might get shot down here Markus But I thought that any unhopped beer in the 1500/1700's throughout Britain was known as Ale. The foreign stuff (from Barvaria etc ) that contained hops, was collectively known as beer. All of this of course changed once hops became accepted throughout Britain.
