Gearing up for my first BIAB and have been playing with a recipe in Brewmate. The recipe I'm looking to scale down is the SNPA clone which has an efficiency of 77%. I suspect this is probably a litte ambitous for my first BIAB (single step no sparge).

What's a decent assumption to make for effciency for your first BIAB with a 40L Crown Urn?

Also, I was looking to have a crack at a 10L batch first time round. Does volume affect efficiency?

Vol doesn't effect efficiency, expected OG does effect it. The higher the OG the lower the EFF.

Being no sparge I would dial up 70%. Just make sure you measure what you actually get ready for next time.
 
I generally aim for around 70% and the majority of my brews are around there...give or take a few. I've been getting this since day one, so no reason you can't.

Volume won't affect efficiency as long as you scale the recipe correctly.

It also depends on the SG of the wort your making. My mash efficiency (SG of the wort after mashout/lifting the bag) is generally around 77-80%. I tend to make beers in the vicinity of 5.5-6%

If your aiming for a beer around 4-5% then you might expect to set your mash efficiency for around 80% for the first go and see how you go from there. If you BIAB in a crown urn then I would be aiming for around 65-68% into the fermenter. This will equate to around 77-80% mash efficiency if you have the same losses as me.

For the first year of BIAB I got a consistent 70% efficiency. However, i'm pretty much getting 75% now due to a process change, i.e. dunk sparge + hand squeeze.

Go for 70% for now and see how it goes...
 
Doing pale beers at about 4.5% abv and most of the time end with 22L in the cube and top up in the fermenter to 23L. Measure things at full volume and most times hit 70%+/- 2%. Don't wary about all the figures enjoy making the brew. The rest will come as you learn.
