Gday everyone,
No doubt you are all sick of hearing from me this weekend, but i have a question
Can Full AG Mash's be done in a 20lt Mash Tun.
Just finished a Partial Mash this afternoon.
Cheers

There are quite a few threads on this very topic.

Very briefly, I think if you fly sparge you can get away with a mash tun that is the same volume as your batch size. If you are planning to batch sparge you will need a bigger mash tun as you need some head space when you add the sparge water.

I know a few people who have used a 20L mash tun but inevitably they have upgraded to a bigger one (even the fly spargers).

Do a quick search for some of the other threads (literally about whether a 20L tun is big enough), they have had quite a biot of info on the topic.

I batch-sparged with a a 20L mash/lauter vessel for a couple of years. Can you do it? Yes, of course. Is it practical? Of course a bigger vessel is more practical, but if i is all you have to hand, go for it!

yeah i just posted about the same thing a week ago ar so.

I used a 25 liter esky for a while when i started mashing and it worked great.

23 liter batches. I do believe 1.070 or so was its limitation with a fly sparge.

Mate eskys are cheap at Big W or K mart.

I do believe i stated my fav saying.....

better to be looking at it than looking for it.

in this case id be refering to room in the mash ton

your better off with one thats too big than one thats too small

I had a slab of foam cut to press down onto the top of the mash so there was no air space over the mash.

used to hold within 1/2 a deg.

cheers

If you can get a hold of Jazzafish on here, He has my old bucket in bucket mash tun or knows who he passed it on to...2 buckets(one with tap, other with gazillion holes in the base) and wrapped in 2 layers of bubble wrap(thanks PoL)

Did many a fine brew, just that the lip of the lower bucket was the liquid limit (20litre)..and I forgot a few times...

You can batch sparge, but need to split the sparge water into 2 -3 additions....Mash, drain,1st sparge,drain,2nd sparge and drain

Cheers Linz,
I have just ordered a fly sparge arm. See how i go, I am going to do my first AG next weekend a Germn Pils with tettnang hops.
Cant wait

thats how i started out with partials before i found AHB.

only i didnt have a tap on my outer bucket. I used to syphon it into a 18 liter pot with some 3/8 poly tubing.

got a few red hot mouthfiulls of wort :)

thats when i built the esky mashton.

much easier.

pumpy posted a pic of me with it on the "tonys AG brew rig" thread. I posted a pic back of him too :)

cheers

I thought that was you in your avatar ;)

I started out with a Daddy Kool cylindrical esky, courtesy of GMK. Not sure how small it was, but I am sure it wasn't any more than 20L, if that.

Meant lower gravity beers for a while, and I had a fly sparge set up so ran with that.

Both worked out good for me, you learn a lot about all grain brewing by mastering the lower gravity end and the fly sparge to begin with. Least ways, that is what I now tell myself - as I use my 35L Keep Cold and batch sparge to my heart's content.
