When I got my set of equipment to get started on kit brewing, there was a tube thingy with a spring-loaded valve included. It fits under the fermenter tap and is for filling bottles without aeration. The first time I used it I was frustrated by how slowly the beer filled the bottles, so I chucked the tube thingy aside and just let the beer pour directly from the tap into the bottles, which was much faster. Does the tube thingy really do any good?

It will reduce the chance of oxidation of your beer.

Leave the tube on but remove the valve and spring.

Buy a single action lever flick tap and use that instead.

This will enable you to get the green beer to the bottom of the bottle with a minimum of splashing (aeration) and the tap can be operated with one finger due to it being spring loaded.

Anyone have a pic of the tap that I'm talking about?

No picture I'm afraid, but the HBS will know what you mean when you say "snap tap" :)
