Hi All,

I've just spent the evening calibrating Volume vs Depth on my new 98l SS brew vessel. It's a beerbelly beauty with the hopscreen fitted to the pickup tube and a thermometer fitted as well. I used a 2l erlenmeyer flask for my volume reference.

I thought I'd share the numbers because I'm guessing there's a few of you out there with the same (or very similar) configuration.

In short, the Depth vs Volume is non-linear until the 63mm/12l mark (at which point the pickup plumbing is completely submerged).

After that, it's 5mm for every 1l. A beautiful thing indeed - almost as beautiful as that hop screen...

(The above figures make sense as the pot is 500mm in diameter. Thus its area = Pi*r*r = 0.197454msqrd. And 5mm * 0.197454 = 0.987l. Lovely).

Test boil down at the brew-space tomorrow night. If we don't blow ourselves up with the Italian Spiral I'll post some evaporation figures.

Well done by the way - any closer to a straight line and I'd have you for cheating. In fact... perhaps it IS too close?

Well those numbers are too close at any rate. I proceeded at 2l intervals from 2l through to 50l - at which point I'd come as far as I could up my 300mm steel rule (the clamp was obscuring the numbers at 270mm); and satisfied myself that the progression was true and regular.

After whacking all the numbers in to a spreadsheet I infilled the 5mm/1l increments from the 12l mark. Which will just it easier for us on brew nights really.

Thanks for the line graph - what software did you use? I ran one up in Google Docs, but it wasn't as pretty as yours so I left it out.

Excel doesn't need to look as bad as the default settings that people seem to love. The simple graph didn't really warrant the myriad of other graphing software I use - if it's simple, use Excel, then make it prettier.

Now I've just got to get around to doing the same with my kettle!
