G'day all,

Just in relation to yeast starters, i normally get 'em going in a 500ml glass science flask (i forget their name now, been too long since uni chemistry) then step up to a 2L coke bottle. I'm thinking of getting a 5L glass demijohn to make a permanent replacement of coke bottles. Just wondering if this would be too big for my starter stepping up from say 500ml to 1.5L? Too much head space?

cheers,

Matt :beerbang:

G'day mbd1979, what's important for good yeast production is to step up each starter by a factor of 10. If you have approx 250 ml of yeast sediment then pitch it into 10 times its volume of new wort, say2.5 lts :D

Hey Matt,
I use 5lt glass demijons for yeast starters with a stir plate and have had no dramas. I did step it up though just like it has been noted in the above post. I have so much yeast now i dont know what to do with it all haha

Great to store it

Hi Matt,

I use a 2lt sherry flagon and a 5lt demijohn with bungs and airlocks, if im doing a lager or high gravity then I just step up to the 5 lt. I also half fill these so when I run the airstone in them they dont foam out.

Cheers

hey razz, thanks for the tip, it's handy to know.

what i'm still not 100% on is whether i can jump from a 500ml flask to a 5L demijohn (keeping the factor of 10) until i have the required amount of starter. To save in washing / sanitising etc and to minimise transfer between vessels, i'd like to think i can, for example, keep topping up the wort until i have a 1.5L starter in a 5L demijohn without headspace being an issue...

cheers

uh.. 10 times 500ml is 5 litres...

edit

head space shouldnt be an issue in a yeast starter

oops, should have chosen better figures! wasn't thinking... head space not an issue, thanks for clearing that up. :p

Been using 5 litre demijohns for years now. (I pitch to 40 litres). They're great. :beerbang:
