Information is much more widely available now, but this thread reminded me of a section in one of Charlie Papazian’s books (The Home Brewer’s Companion, 1993 or ‘94) which spent a few pages discussing a brew made by Anchor in 1989 in an attempt to follow a 4000 year old Sumerian recipe.
They named the brew Ninkasi. Charlie doesn’t provide a review of the beer but he does provide a recipe.
