Just did a 2nd hyrometer reading and it was the same as yesterday.

Tasted the sample and some definite vegemite tones there (confirmed by my daughter). They were not there yesterday when i checked the gravity.

I'm checking a bit as its still got condensation and stuff happening, but I was concerned it may be geting on a bit.

Oh, and I also had some major clumping of the DME due to menot putting it in the correct order

Wort was pitched 9 days ago, OG was 1060.

I used:

1 Coopers pale extract kit 1.7kg
1 Brew enhancer 2
500 g DME.

I got the recipe from this site.

Has been fermenting at around 16-18 degrees - now up to 20-22 the last 2 days.

So, how long do I wait for the fg to fall to arounf 1010

Is the vegemite thing normal (I'm thinking not)

Suggestions, help, assurances all appreciated!

BEC, dont be scared to leave the wort on the yeast cake for up to a week to make sure the FG has stabilised. if i remember correctly there may be some dried corn syrup in BE2? if so,the corn syrup is unfermentable thus resulting in a high FG reading because there is no sugar for the yeast to convert into alcohol, but this should give you a better mouthfeel to the final product. ive never had many beers fall below 1018-1014 because i add alot of stuff to alter the flavour profile that doesnt ferment. leave it for a few days at the temp you fermented at (IF POSS) and take another reading. if the next reading is the same, bottle or keg away and enjoy :chug:

cheers,dan

1060 is a pretty high OG therefore 1016 is perfectly reasonable for a FG. Stop looking at it - bottle it and wait and see what happens. If the vegemite taste lingers, try buying some real yeast such as an S04 or US 05 (or even a liquid yeast if you are prepared to get serious) ie chuck away the stuff on top of the can. Brewing is about crashing through it and learning form your and others mistakes.

1060 to 1016. Sounds pretty normal to me. If the FG stays steady at 1016 for another day or 2 then just bottle/keg.

A good rule of thumb is that your FG will be 1/4 of your OG. If you're withing a couple of points of that, you're safe.

I don't monitor SG any more, I just do about 7 days primary, then about 7 days secondary then bottle/keg. I say 'about' because sometimes it's 4, sometimes 9, but always a total of 13-15 days. Works for me.

Hi there,

1060 to 1016 is an apparent attenuation of around 72%. That's pretty good, near the upper end of the range for most of the liquid yeasts I use.

vegemite= dead yeast....
or so i've heard ...
hmm could be sign of bad karma sorry to say...
hope not for your sake

Went to buy bottles to finish up, and both Big W and K-Mart had sold out!

Will check the shelves again tomorrow.

Must be all of us new "Fathers day" Brewers ;-)

Cheers

just curious, i did a coopers pale ale like this but i dont know anything about this adding 500g dme. do they sell extra stuff at the brew shop to add to k&ks?

The DME I got was from Big W

Just make sure that you add it first with warm/hot water an swirl the fermenter, then add other feremetables.

Others have said that DME is cheaper and less clumpy if you get it from a local HBS.

Cheers
