    Low Og For Our Ag

G'day Brewers, Many thanks to you all for taking the time to reply. Seems like we have a lot to learn still, but we are keen to learn it quickly. I have joined the Brew Adelaide forum and asked if we can observe a couple of brew days to get our head around procedures. Cheers and...

    Low Og For Our Ag

G'day Brewers, A short outline of our process: We had about 35L in our kettle to heat through, but we used about 22-25L for the mash. We bagged the grain (similar to BIAB) to let it steep in the mash tun (esky) as we had no falsie. After steeping, we transferred the pre-boil wort to the...

G'day Nige, yeah grain was crushed, was a bit old too (more than a couple of months) and yes there were dough balls. Sorry about the mix up with the extract/all grain bit. Cheers and happy brewing, Damo

    Low Og For Our Ag

G'day Brewers, We did our first AG at the weekend (DrSmurto's Golden Ale). We used the volumes of grain given on the AHB recipe db. When we entered these into BeerSmith the expected OG was very low. Our measured OG was also very low, so we added som light DME to get the gravity up. Can...

    Halting Fermentation

Thanks Nick JD :D Safest bet would be to let fermentation finish then.. Sounds like a plan. I guess with the cooler weather the fermentation process will take a bit longer anyway? Cheers and happy brewing, Damo

    Halting Fermentation

G'day Brewers, My current brew has been fermenting for 7 days. I used a powdered yeast nutrient to improve attenuation, but I fear it might dry out the beer too much. Can I stop the fermentation by cold crashing, then adding finings to limit the amount of unspent yeast entering the...

    Sugars In Beers

G'day Brewers, Marca85 this is a top question. Have a look around for recipes using different types of sugars. I recently did a Coopers K&E and used some golden syrup to add some extra fermentables and change the flavour. Turned out pretty good. You can use other things like honey...

    Cold Weather Yeasts?

G'day Brewers, Thanks for the rapid responses. Will read up on the yeast types to see if they suit what I am planning to brew. Cheers and happy brewing, Damo

    Cold Weather Yeasts?

G'day Brewers, Well I did a quick search on AHB for this, but obviously didn't have any luck. Are there any ale yeasts that are better suited to a lower fermenting temperature? Say around 14-18C? With winter approaching in South Oz, I want to keep brewing, but not keen on the heater...

    Stout Carbination ?

G'day Brewers, Agree on the lower carbing of stouts (also applicable for porters). If you are interested in moving to bulk priming I would suggest getting the "Kit__extract_beer_designer_V2.3b" available for download in another thread. This gives recipe styles and suggested carbonation...

    When To Cold Condition?

G'day Brewers, Thanks again for all your rapid responses. Very helpful indeed. Don't mind admitting my last few brews were a little under-carbed due to racking then fining then bulk priming. D'oh! :( Will correct the procedure during next brew. Cheers and happy brewing, Damo

    When To Cold Condition?

G'day Brewers, What about cold crashing in the primary to help clear a beer when adding finings? Cheers and happy brewing, Damo

    Fat Yak(tastes Like Crap)

G'day Brewers, Agree with Goomba, gotta use the right glass for the beer. Stubbies are terrible to drink from, all tastes crap. Cheers and happy brewing, Damo

    Fat Yak(tastes Like Crap)

G'day Brewers, Had a FY from tap at Melbourne Q Club today. Was ok. Usual hop taste and quite cloudy. I agree with those who say when one of the "good" beers becomes popular, the taste changes due to the need to pump out a higher volume at the cost of the original recipe. Just my 2c worth...
