    Brewing In 2 Stages

Funny you post this question as it was only a couple of days ago I was thinking of the days I would mash 1 day and boil the next. I have done it I got no nastie flavours but like yourself I only did it because of time limits. I wouldnt recomend it but if it is the last resort then give it a go.

    Tonys Ag Brew Rig

Looks good Tony. Only one question and that is why didnt you put the HLT on a higher teir and use gravity to fly sparge and therefore halving your plumbing hardware? Doesn't fly sparging give a better efficency? Also if you reciculate your mash through your HLT and your hot liquor is at at...

    Aeration Of Wort

I have been using dried yeast lately so I havent needed to aerate. But last weekend i used a liquid yeast, first time in ages. I didnt aerate my wort but gave my 1lt yeast starter a good shaking before adding it and within a day it was going silly. I know yeast takes up the oxygen to multipy...

A First Timers Attempt At Decoction Mashing

I have been mashing now for many years but did my first decoction a few weeks back. I used weyerman pils as bulk never used it before. Did a one step decoction and the wort was sweet as and very malty in flavour will not be my last. As i have a herms system i removed a guessed amount of...

    1st Brew Stories

My first was a coopers tin ,draught i think. Was all good except for the white sugar, gives a awful taste. Next couple i replaced the sugar with dextrose and further on to all malt. I didnt brew to many tins as i found they didnt taste like beer should it was then i went to all grain. I've never...

How Much Sparge Water Do I Need

I mash with 2 - 2.5L per kg and sparge with a hydrometer. If im doing a 25L brew I will sparge untill I my hydrometer reads 1010 for a pale lager or as low as 1006(when cooled) for other brews. Most times I sparge the final volume sometimes more if there is still goodness in my mash, this means...

    Jarrah Jacks

I tried one a while back, it reminded me of little creatures. I was a bit scepticle at first about buying one but thought what the hell. I'm not a big hop head, I prefere a malt dominated beer and a hint of hops but did like your JJ pale ale. Not something I would drink every day or week but...

    Are They Scared Of Flavour?

I must confess and say im a lager lover. But saying that I will usually only drink German lagers as you can actually get a malt flavor in them (free of adjunct and the like). Bitburger is in at the moment but I do tend to down them easy and get a bit intoxicated fast. I love dunkels and...

    Plumbing For Herms

I used the braided under sink plumbing hoses with female threads on the ends. They dont screw onto the pump to well so grap a twin pack of 30cm extention hoses with a male thread on one end and an extra deep female which threads onto the pump well. I guess they are ok to use as you can run hot...

    Worst Comerical Beer You Had

Most Carlton United Beers are off except for some of the beer brewed at there smaller breweries like matilda bay (redback, dogbolter). They all seem to taste very much similar in taste to me and that is rank. The worst is probably V.B. Toohey extra dry is another I dont fancy. The only cold...

New Mash Tun, Coleman 38 Litre.

Theres a sheet metal place here in Perth called Perfmet who sell stainless steel screen used in the mining industry. It looks just like the stuff found in professional brew systems. It is exspensive but a small peice for the bottom of your tun would be ideal and not cost alot.

    Ash's Brewery Progress

Hi Ash, Your brewery should work fine. One thing i dont have is a CFC I use a imersion coil as less stress over infection if the CFC is not sanitized well. Is this your first all-grain setup? Have you been brewing for long if so where you a tin man or a partial masher? I have been interested...

    Heat Exchange For The Mash

Ok if that is the case herms it is, lagers are on the menu. Now what is a good recirculating rate? Litres per minute? I'm using a round s/s pot with a 30cm s/s false bottom. Also what ratio of malt to water is needed.

    Heat Exchange For The Mash

I am wanting to know of people experiences with a heat exchange in the mashing process. I have just made a copper heat exchange which I am going to use for mashing heat exchange. The only problem is I dont know wheather to pump the mash liquid through it or place the exchange in my mash tun and...

    All Set To Go, But.....

Isnt carapils a light crystal malt therefore already gone through the conversion process in the grain? If so you need not to steep it but add it directly to the kettle in a bag? You could steep I guess and drarw off the liquid but dont expect any conversion process in the vessel.

Fixing A Stuck Sparge (how Not To)

I would visit TWOC and get a large stainless steel false bottom and adapt it to a mash tun. Then also take note of your grind. To much powder can result in a run stuck. Whole husk is always best.

    Hopped Extract In Partial

If I was doing this brew I would boil up 7 litres of water in a stainless steel stock pot. In that I would add 1.5kg of light dme (instead of the 2 kg pale malt) then add your crystal malt (coarsely milled) in a bag. Crystal malt has already been through the conversion process therefore it can...

    Heineken 5l Kegs

The 5L Heini keg. Yes you can enjoy the nice lager and then refill. For those who have a keg system use a counter presure unit to transfer from keg to keg just before the party or where ever you are going. I have not done it, yet, but i guess...
