    Automation - Pid Capabilities

Apologies for yet another thread, but I'm looking at some basic automation; literally not much more than plug and play. (Note: when I say basic, I mean without the level of detailed electronics experience shown by some of our members :P ) I'd like some advice on the viability of this option...

    Milk Vat's For Brewing

They are sensational looking units, no doubt about it, but unless you were brewing big (ie huge) batches, I would think maintaining a reasonable depth grain bed would be the biggest issue in using them as a mash tun. As a fermenter; can you imagine trying to tilt it to get those last few L above...

    Plambic & The Turbid Mash

A spectacularly violent fermentation - fantastic stuff. The only bummer about brewing lambics is that you have to wait so loooong to find out how it's turned out! Sounds like a successful day guys, and good luck keeping the rest of your breweries clean!

Chest Freezer Collar.... How Do I Make One?

Turto, I made a collar last weekend, used pine at 140mm high (height chosen to allow keg #6 to fit on the compressor), double width with expanding foam in the middle, used a third piece at 200mm high on the inside to "sit" the collar in comfortably. Gave it 3 coats of exterior weatherproof...

How Much Does Your Home Brewed Beer Cost A Litre To Make ?

Long as it's cheaper a L than petrol, it's all good. Isn't it??? Guess this philosophy makes brewing in the UK look dead cheap, eh? This is not a good thing to consider if one includes acquisition of gear  I pay what I need to pay to get the gear I want once, without having to consider...

Split Keg - Hopback And Regular

So, I'm thinking that I might install a water filter hopback to my chest freezer setup, and look at running one keg through to two taps; one through the hopback, the other au natural. That way I'll be able to choose whether I want the extra hop hit in the IPA's... (who am I kidding, I'll drink...

    Zizzle's Brewbot

Once again, the collective nous of the AHB'ers comes through with solid advice; onya gents - the more I look at this, the more it confuses me... :P I know what I'd like to achieve, but my lack of elec/programming experience coupled with my awe of all things metal (holy crap... Zwickel drilled...

    Zizzle's Brewbot

A quick question for Zizzle and others using the Dallas DS1820s... (and excuse my electronics ignorance here), but what are you housing them in for use in a HLT or HERMS, etc? In a probe (aka the s/s chopstick - nice one BTW) or a dedicated thermowell? And to *really* show my ignorance - what...

I Don't Know What Language This Recipe Is In

This article about Skittlebrau also appeared in Zymurgy Mar/Apr 04 (attached) while I acknowledge the scientific rigour and willingness to challenge, this just looks like a bad idea all round to me...

    Automating A Brewery

Good advice gents, thanks. Thought I might be on a winner there, but not to be - as you both rightly pointed out; they have a rubber "NBR" seal. Back to scouring sites and reading up on what I want... ;) EDIT: if the key downside of these valves would be the potential to get grain husk etc...

    Automating A Brewery

A question for all you automation gear-head types... can someone pls give me some advice on whether this unit would be suitable? I'm looking for a couple of solenoid valves, in the first instance I'm wanting one to run a HERMS unit, where a low temp reading in the mash tun will trigger the...

    Adventurous Brewers Wanted

(pinched from an earlier post, but...) Temperature effects on same yeast strain - Take a style where the yeast has different profiles at different temps (hefe?), same malt, hops, yeast, just fermented at bottom of recommended range, mid range, high end of range, started low and finished high...

Why An American Would Want To Move To Oz

Hi Joe, Ive actually made the reverse transition, moving to Houston 3 months ago. It wasnt something Id ever planned to do, just an opportunity through work to transfer for a couple of years that came up. For us, the key "why?" was because the company paid for the relocation costs, it allowed us...

Big Chill Coolers As A Mash Tun

If you upsize it from 40L, you can mash double batches, and use it for a miracle box. Dunno how they hold heat, but if you keep them closed, they only need a bag of ice top up every 2-3 days. Based on this, I assume with a bit of pre-heating they'd be excellent tuns.

    Food Poisoning From Beer

Jagungal, I reckon you should defend the honour of your beer. Grab half a dozen bottles of your stout, take them round to your aforementioned mate's house, and proceed to drink them, preferably while watching the footy. Although your coherence may decrease over this period, your confidence in...

    The Great Belgian Experiment

Playing the Aussie card does work a treat - on the way out of the local bottlo I put a couple of 6 packs onto the front passenger seat of the pickup, walked around and as I was about to get in, the trooper parked about a couple of bays down drawled "Uh.. Sir??". Seeing it was a copper, I walked...
