I lost two Erlenmyer flasks on my stove. Virtually one after the other.
So now i use a saucepan :p
No need for the fancy name stuff anymore !

A bit off topic but a magnetic stirrer will go straight through the side of an Erlenmeyer flask if it becomes unstable and flicks off. Keep 'em going slowly. Fast isn't neccesarily better.

cheers

Ross, did the Pyrex actually break or shatter? Just interested if it sent glass around your kitchen, or confined to the stove top.

Pretty well as you see it - sent a few splinters round the stove top, but couldnt find any in the carpet - no doubt my feet will find any I missed ...

LOL Ross's Pyrex law? I guess I'll be using the stove pot from now on <_<

To right Darren.
From all my research, slow stir is best for your stirplate.
I now use a Borosilicate (sp?) Flask ( beaker ) that has thick wall and base glass on my stir plate, and as i say a high tech saucepan on the stove :p

I thought the erlenmyer flasks were meant for stove/open flame use??

Certainly been using mine on the stove with no problems - thus far

cheers Ross

Open flame - yes... Electric Element

I use (note - used... On gas now) a wire diffuser. I think it's for gas, but works on the electric element just fine.

Agro.

I steer clear of pyrex anyway. Ive seen two blow up just sitting in a dish rack after being washed up.

Better off in the bin Ross.

Ross, its the "grooves" in the element that caused the problems. Some areas hot, some areas not. Causes too much stress on the glass. Kitchen grade "pyrex" is designed for the microwave or oven only.

cheers
Darren

let's just let it rest as : you guys never spent much time in the kitchen before brewing.

live and learn, and hopefully without burns and accidents ;)
