Having not made a brew for some 18 months and wanting to eventually get into AG's, i'm curious to know what the cost of making a 23lt wort compared to buying an Extract/Part mash kit from the HBS??

Rook

it depends on ingredients of course, but on average it cost me around $20 for a brew.
thats buying cracked grain by the kilo and hops and yeast.

I would assume AG is cheaper

5Kg of grain will equate to a OG of around 1050 and a bag of powels malt 25Kg costs 30 or so dollars

Not sure what you would pay for that much extract

Obviously hops/yeast and specialty malts would be the same as the extract brews you are doing

How I got Morgans Kits was $10 a hit.

So say $15 for a brew or $18 with finishing hops and finings.

Or a quaffer, but still okay beer, $9 for coopers kit, $3.5 for Coopers Brew Enhancer 1 = $14.50

The Coopers Bitter and Draught are u beaut.

For me it's something like $20 including grain, hops, yeast, gas etc. That's for a 1050 batch. Most kits make more like a 1040 beer, so add 25% onto their price to compare. AG should taste better as well.

Buuuuuuuuuuuut, you'll blow all you save on all the equipment you want/need anyway. And love it. :super:

4.5 Kg Powells Ale Malt = $5.76
1 Kg Powells Pils Malt = $ 1.44
200g Carapils = $0.60
20g Roasted Barley = $0.10
18G POR Hops $0.20
15g Cluster Hops $0.83
10g Glacier Hops $0.55
Split of Wyeast English Ale 1098 $3.00
1/2 Whirlflock tablet $0.13
Gas $4.14

Total $16.75

Like Berazafi said, hops, yeast, sanitiser and specialty grain cost the same for both extract and ag. So work out how much 3kg of lme is going to cost vs say 5kg of crushed base grain.

The cost is going to vary depending on what sort of base grain you use. Something like Weyermann Pilsner is roughly $75 a 25kg bag, Powells is alot cheaper.

As to the price of extract, have a look at G&G's site, they are closish to you and should be indicative of prices in your region.

Extract can become expensive when you have a go at making an AG for the first time :( or like some, drink someones AG and say I WANT TO DO THAT :p Oh it's true, It happeneds to home brewers more and more of late,You can't drink the stuff [Extract] anymore, and find yourself giving it away or tipping it out to make space for your AG, also go crazy looking for gear to make it [AG what else?] .
Ask 'Incider' gave him a case [of extract /partials] yesterday [he will drink anything when he is in the mood] BUT; After drinking the case swap[most being AG] is now converted, he is going to do a simple AG with me on Friday :) if work does not get in the way, and he, like me I am sure, will give the "goo" away.
And it is still cheaper if you can drink AND enjoy what you make.

Yep! That's right! Free Beer!

Some of the old extracts were hard to take. Oh baby. But with great AG like "Red Rover" and Russian Imperial Stout, it's easy to be conveted to make the change... and I practically wrote a love letter about Screwtop's Nut Brown Ale...

InCider.

And one thing to consider if anyone lives remote like myself and a few other posters is the added bonus of freight costs. It aint pretty.
