Hey all

My next brew is to be a steam beer. I have been searching through recipes and gradually narrowing down the options. One recipe I came across suggested adding all 33IBU (c. 150 grams of Northern Brewer) no earlier than 10 minutes before flame-out. I've read quite a bit about late additions and 'hopbursts' but has anyone tried this? I don't think I'm that keen on the idea, not least because of the exorbitant amount of hops (be different if they were off of your own plant I guess).

Cheers

have you got the USA Northern brewer hops ?

Pumpy :)

I found Northern Brewer hops to be very minty when used in excess

That'd be my only caveat

Actually sounds similiar to my 'late hop' NB experiences. Quite a perculiar flavour, and i'm not sure I like it...genuinely woody and herbaceous.

My experience with Steam Beers (Anchor), really suggests that not a great deal of late hop is used. I found it to be quite a malty beer indeed.

Hi Pumpy

I'd have to check - they came from Ross. Is there a big difference between German and US NB?

I made one last year based on Trough Lolly's recipe. It took quite a while to develop but by the time I was down to the last few bottles :( it was smashing. A really lovely, malty but well balanced beer. I can understand how an OD of NB would be quite minty and unwanted. I think I'll stick to convention here...
