So up until now, i have used DME in my boils to achieve the required gravity and LME tins straight in the FV, as the tins are sealed and sanitary and therefore dont require boiling.

I'm thinking about buying bulk DME for the cost advantage and using DME only in my brews but I'm concerned that dissolving the remaining DME in the FV won't be sufficiently sanitary?

Anyone have experience with this?

Cheers, Matt

Dissolve it in a small amount of boiling hot water, then add to fermenter

I'm thinking about doing the same. I'll probably just throw the remainder of the DME in to the pot at the end of the boil.

Don't really think there is much of a sanitation issue tbh, with kit brews the DME or brew enhancers just get chucked in dry. I never had an issue doing that when I was making kits.

$110 for 20kg of DME is definitely more appealing than $12-$15 for 1.5kg of LME.

I tend to put all remaining fermentables in at the end of the boil to dissolve it and sanitize,(can goop included), before chilling down to 20 odd degrees and tipping into the fermenter. It's not hard as long as your pot has the extra room, and will mean you can buy in bulk, with peace of mind!

Yeah I was thinking that would be one way around it, but I was concerned that you might lose some of the sugars if they were to get caught up in the hops and trub when you strain it into the FV...

I am quite possibly over thinking this.....

Damn right.... or $12-14 per kilo of DME at my LHBS... and the recipe asks for 3.5kg!

I don't even strain, the whole contents of the pot go in to my FV, I find it all settles out perfectly with a cold crash (with gelatin if it needs a bit of extra help)

I mix my DME in cold water (surprisingly easy) & chuck it in the fermenter

I'd be concerned about 20KG of DME sitting around. If you're not careful it will absorb moisture and turn into goop.

I share your concern, however I plan on vacuum bagging into 1-2kg lots as soon as I open the bag to solve this issue.

I just put mine in a tub (big bag) with a moisture absorption pack things.. Too easy
I meant to ask you about this when I got my DME from you...what are these moisture absorption pack things of which you speak?

And where does one find them?

Crystal kitty litter, same stuff, much cheaper. Just put it in a hop sock or the like. Sift out the dust first.

I throw everything in the last minute of the boil. For what it's worth, I am generally a few points short of my target if I strain everything. Nothning dramatic enough for me not to do it though.
