On my Gravity System I used to re-circ by hand and only until chunks had stopped. the wort was still cloudy.
On my HERMS I recirculate until crystal clear. Sometimes including a mash out
My gravity system beers flavour profile included a distinct graininess initially in the keg. Usually associated with a fast dropping(a week or two to clear bright or a 1/4 of a keg) protein haze. Once pouring bright taste was gone.
HERMS beers will pour bright and clean without this graininess.
So I came to this conclusion:
Recirculate to crystal clear for a cleaner tasting beer quicker. Important in light coloured lagers and subtle flavoured beers.
Or put up with some flavour producing haze in you kegged beer until it drops bright.
Adding a filter pre kegging may be another solution but I don't have one so can't comment.
Cheers
