I wish I could tell you the type or variety of the orange, but I can't.

It is very tart though...

Sounds like Valencia to me. They are very common around SE Qld certain times of the year. They have alot more seeds than Navel, which are sweeter and more watery.

These aren't from a shop, they were growing at my parent's place. I don't think it is them. They were really sour and tart, not just a little.

I could be wrong of course though...

Hi bconnery
my guess is that they are seville oranges which are grown primarily for making seville marmalade. They certainly are sour but make great marmalde. The fruit is generally only available around August (in Qld anyhow) and when I can I use the fresh rind in my witbier or I just use some of my homemade seville marmalade. I believe they are also referred to as Curacao orange and unlike many other varieties of citrus will grow ture to type from seed. They are probably close to a wild rather than a cultivated orange, given this latter fact.
Cheers
Stephen.

Maybe Seville Bruce, see Here they were popular years ago for jams and marmalade. Sure made an interesting beer.

You're probably right. I've had some similar oranges myself... not bought, but from a property in Beaudesert
