Hi Guys,

is there anywhere in the S/E burbs of Melbounrne to buy milled grain. Or do you all head over to G+G ?

cheers
Matt

Brewers Den in Boronia (more eastern than south eastern)

Cheers SJ

Sadly no.

Your choices are G&G (who will deliver), Greensie (mill on the spot and talk for ages), Brewers Den or Craftbrewer (deliver from QLD).

I buy my base malt by the sack now and buy spec grains as required.

thanks, I have bought a bit (kits and the like) from Peter at Boronia, didn't realise he sold milled grain. I just find sometimes Peter can be a little rude and condescending but I like there selection of kits and "enhancers" they have, love the ESB Stout with stout kit and ESB Brown with brown kit,

One way is to plan a few brews ahead and do a trip to say G&G.

They sell most of the Powell's range of grain which I've been using in almost all my brews.

Either way it's handy to have a few kg's of wheat, munich, etc along with crystal and choc malt for small additions in stock at all times. This way if you decide to adjust the recipe you can.

Good luck with the ebay urn !!

PS..What suburb are you in?

Haven't used Pete myself as I go to G&G but hear from plenty that do that he can get a lot of grain types that G&G don't have (such as Barrett Burston for example). You just have to know what you want and phone it through in advance. I know he has gone the extra mile for a few brewers and got stuff out of Sydney for them also.

Seemax is on the money in terms of your options (G&G, Greensborough & Brewers Den). Don't bother with Brewcraft as their supply comes through G&G with mark-up on top. Plus their store always seems to have about three types of grain and little else. If you order there, you may as well go direct to G&G.

Pete's a funny guy who doesn't suffer fools gladly at times, but is a very talented brewer and knows his stuff. This comes from what I've seen (and tasted :icon_cheers:).

Hopper.

thanks, need to put heater in urn give it a clean and then try a brew :) I just bought a cube $16 Bunnings and a $12 garden spray, may try a porta keg hack.

I thought once the grain was milled I should use it in a short period ?

I'm in Mulgrave, so not too far from you.

cheers

for me I've had a good chat with him, but the first time I mentioned I had a leak, run out of gas in a weak and he said "serves ya right for leaving the gas on" that had rather a condescending tone, then mentioned I buy a font from ebay and again it's your fault, then went on about how I wouldn't know how to tell the diff between the gas and beer connector on the cornies, wasn't exactly helpful, that was my first experience so I was a little put off, I have been back 4 or 5 times after and it's been fine (he's only been there once). I've been to narree brew a couple of times and he just doesn't seem to like people in his store :)

I don't mind heading over to G+G or delivery but if there is a lhbs I will try to support them.

cheers

Greensborough Homebrewing Supplies - Dave - 9432 0283 if you can make the drive over its well worth it.

+1
Dave is top bloke and offers excellent, friendly service along with competitive pricing. He has pretty much all the Joe White range and good selection of Weyermann.

Mxd,
You can store crushed grain for months if it's well sealed and stored in dry , cool (ish) area. If you're interested I brew with Warmbeer occasionally (he lives not far from me) ... I do Esky style BIAB... you're more than welcome to join in the action, have a few beers, etc.

I used to shop with Peter when i lived in Glen Waverley...i found him to be good...once you got to know him...as stated...he doesn't suffer fools...but i will say...there are many opinions on how to do something and Peter's is only one...

I did not know at the time that he grain brewed ( i was doing kits & FWK's back then ) and i didnt know he was part of Melbourne Brewers ( can i say to anyone who isn't in a club...join one...you'll learn heaps..)

Maybe give Peter the benefit of the doubt...take his advice on board ( sometimes with a pinch of salt ) cause he does know what he is on about ( even if he sometimes does come across harsh like ) and have some fun brewing

Lucky now i live less than 2 km's from G&G...
Merry Beermas..i mean christmas...
Cheers

I also shop there. I drive past 2 LHBS's to shop there! And you can walk in, ask for grains, and he will weigh and crack them, then and there.

+1... Go to Daves. No bull, just good service and quality stuff.

Whats peter like on 25kg bag prices for grain? Boronia is a lot easier for me to get to than G&G or Greensy (spewing my missus doesnt still live in watsonia)

Komodo, you are pretty close to Powells Malt, located in Braeside (Fcty6/ 233 Boundary Rd).

They sell direct to public - ale, pils, vienna, munich, cara .. prices are around $40-45 per 25kg sack.
