Cheers Nizmoose ( Where do you dudes get your names from ) definitely be using litres per hour from now on.

Ok guys, one last request for you beer geniuses to run your eyes over. Can you please check this formula im using.

I am working backwards to the pre boil volume then working forward, i hope you get it, im also work on a 3L/Kg ratio.

Here we go

Final batch size 20L
Fermenter loss 1L
Fermenter Vol 21L
Kettle Losses 0.5L (trub)
Post Boil Vol 21.5L
Loss to Evap 5L
Pre boil Vol 26.5

Working other way now

Strike volume 15L ( 5Kg Grain @ 3 litres per Kilo Grain )
Loss Grain Abs 5L
MT Dead space 2L
First Running 8L
Sparge Water 18.5L ( Pre boil Vol - first runnings )
Second runnings 18.5L

How does all this sound. I did read or hear John Palmer say both runnings should of similar volume... so a little confused

I don't know about others here, but I track my boil off with a stainless steel ruler. I know how many mm I should start at (depth, pre boil) and I control my burner + element to arrive at just above final depth during the 60 mins. Works surprisingly well.

Though I will add, I have a double batch size pot so it is a bit easier to take measurements than say in a Keggle with wort on the way over the sides!

I have gas and electric power in the same pot so can really bring the hurt if i need it, or slow it right down if the boil gets keen early.

Normally check after 20 mins and then again with 15 to go in a 60 min boil.

Cheers,
D80
