Hi people

I think I have a problem. I have decided to brew an Oatmeal stout and the recipe I have found calls for 2.66KG of Flaked Oatmeal. I cant find Flaked Oatmeal and I have been told to use Rolled Oatmeal. I have not brewed Oatmeal Stout before and am wondering if I need to make an adjustment when substituting Rolled for Flaked Oatmeal. This is for a 55LTR batch and in beersmith it is showing as 20.3 percentof the grain bill is this too much Oatmeal. I plan to brew tomorrow and at the moment have not crushed the grains or added the Oatmeal. Your help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks Altstart

Having just read the entire 11 pages, there is NO reference to the question asked -IE. Is 2.66kg too much rolled oats in a 55L batch. Most seem to have used max 500gm in a standard batch, except Jayse who used 1kg. I don't know the answer, but would back it off a tad personally.

cheers Ross

Yeah 2.66kg of oats is way to much.

Oats in about the quantity that Ross sugested would be better, too much oats I have been told produces an oily texture and a very sticky mash thats a sparging nightmare.

Rolled oats wont work unless they have been gelatinized, products such as quick oats or 2 minute oats which have already had this done are ok.

oatmeal stout is sensational!

Cheers

No it does not say anywhere that 2.66k of oats is too much for a standard batch.

But if the standard amount for a 23L batch is 400-500g, it would not take long for anyne to work out that 2.66k may be a tad high for a 23L batch.

It's probably a bit late for you now, but I used 1.5kg of rolled oats in a 25L batch of oatmeal stout with no problems at all (but lots of rice hulls.) The result was very good, if I do say so myself. I think your recipe sounds alright.
