Hi All,

i am new at this home brew thing (bought the kit last weekend).
im using a coopers home brew kit that came with everything including 30 PET bottles.

i bought it with the sole intention of brewing soft drinks only.
i used the coopers ginger beer mix/can and followed the directions 100%.

bottled the ginger beer after the recommended three hours.
my bottles have been sitting in a nice warm room for the last week, and are feeling nicely
pressurised now, but i am a little worried about a white foamy scum that is sitting on top of most of the bottles.

is this normal ? or do i have a problem ?
i know it's early in the process, but i want to make sure it's all working the way it should.
i have another two weeks to wait till it's supposed to be ready.

can anyone here please offer some guidance and or advice ?

thanks in advance,

Jason.

From memory the scum that is on top of the bottles is like a mini krausen. It just shows that the yeast are doing their job in carbonating the beer. Eventually, it will drop and your beer will clear up a fair bit.

Jaon,

If you use yeast and sugar, it won't be 'soft', it will be alcoholic (in a nice sort of a way), but I wouldn't feed it to the kids.

cheers

Dave

thanks.

i only used the yeast, and the priming drops as recommended in on the can.
so it should be a non alcoholic drink. (well mostly anyway)

just wondering if it will all turn out ok...

Jason.

Should be fine. I've done a few non-alcoholic GB's and they always seem to get a sort of scummy ring around the top that looks like a mini krausen. It also tends to come out with a fair bit of yeast sediment in the bottles at the end too.

thanks.

ill keep watching. i still have two weeks left.
it was bottled last sunday.

Thanks again,

Jason

Jason The scum floating ontop is normal , it will settle and after 3+weeks you should have
home made ginger beer. :D
My five boys have appropriated on of my fermenters and now brew there own non alc
