Low carbonation lager style

I do all my ales in collapsible water containers which work great with a hand pump, but I fancy trying a lager and I'm not spending loads just for the odd lager and want to avoid bottling if possible.

I don't like really gassy stuff any way.

Are there any styles of lager that are typically low fizz, and hence would lend themselves to Dispense In A Bag? :D

I'm pretty sure I've had a few German beers that were pretty flat from the tap, and tasted great but I have no idea what styles.
 
Maybe a big Bock or similar, but really if your hand pumping out of a collapsible container I guess we are talking non carbonation at all. This really does not suit typical Lagers.

Well I get a bit of liveliness - you can feel a bit of fizz , and the heads great.

You've got a hand pump and you want to drink lager ?. I'm not talking to you anymore :).

I reckon dark lagers would go better. Let us know mate
 
A number of UK breweries are doing "real lagers" from the cask - I'd say go ahead and do a typical Euro Lager and serve without a sparkler. In Europe nearly all lagers up to the 1960s would have been delivered to the pubs in wooden casks and served under just enough pressure to get the beer to the tap and into the glass.

On my single trip to Austria, in the late 1970s we stayed in the lovely old city of Steyr. In the pub next to the hotel there were a few beers on tap, one was called Goldquell and the other Goldfassl that were quite different. The "quell" variety was smoother and less fizzy. I went out back looking for the gents and to my delight (I was a CAMRA member) the back alley had a stack of empty wooden casks waiting for collection. They were labelled "Goldquell".

XXXX is available in Brisbane served on gravity from wooden casks with no top pressure at all, and it craps all over the keg version - partly because it's unpasteurised and taken straight off the line before the beer goes to kegging and bottling.

Never knew that about XXXX. I'll do the brewery tour and check it out some time. I honestly think over carbonation is the worst thing in Aussie beers - just tastes of CO2.

I'm definitely going to try a lager and I'll report back - it may be a while though as I've just taken delivery of 3 pounds of yank hops so IPA is go :super:

I'm doing a nearish clone of St Austel Proper Job next.
 
Not quite a lager but altbier (at least the one I make) does well without loads of fizz. Not a major fizz man myself either.
