Hey all,

So tonight I took the plunge and put my first every all grain BIAB on.
It's a mini BIAB on the stove in my appartment.

Grain Bill...
2100g Pale Ale
420g Munich 1
210g CaraAmber

Starting volume was 18L hoping to end up with a 10L wort.

Kept the mash at around 65% for 90mins.
After cooling the initial sample, my gravity reading is 1.034  .
Was aiming to get up around 1.040 as this is an APA.

Should I wait till the end of the boil and see what it's at, or should I chuck in some DME at this point?

Urgent help would be much appreciated - she's heating up to the boil now.

Cheers!!!
Jake.

Did you let the sample cool or are you using a refractometer?

1.034 @65c = 1.052 @20c using a hydrometer

If it was me I'd just give it a good hard boil. If you boil it hard you'll gain a few extra points but will lower your final volume. Your target final volume of 10 litres is quite low for starting with a pre-boil volume of 18 litres anyway. Boil it hard...

A preboil volume of 18L should result in 13L after 60 minutes. It would seem your calculations are out a bit, which makes your OG reading not so surprising. I'd take peakydh's advice and boil down to a higher concentratation, making sure your SG reading is passed through a temperature compensation calculator.

Cooled the sample in a glass of ice water down to 20c.
Measure it with my hydrometer and got 1.034.

Going with the "boil the crap out of it" solution at this point.
Hmmm, actually not sure if that's possible on my cruddy electric stove...any other ideas?

Thanks guys!!!
